A lot of what was wrong with this film cna be forgiven based on the next one. If that one fills in the gaps and takes more risks this one will seem better in hind sight. Equally if they play it too safe or fuck it up it will make this one seem worse as it will make it feel like the whole thing is coasting on nostalgia. Will they build on it or show that they've got nothing to back it up? I'm fairly optimistic though.

I don't think the next movie will make this one better or worse (well, barring something drastic). This one still did what it set out to do very well. But should they just coast, it will make Episode 8 considerably worse and could fuck the new trilogy up. But that is just my perspective and how I see movies like this.

B-but when I asked "who's the remnant again", it was a rhetorical question about how it feels like in the movie the First Order is some galaxy-controlling, all-powerful force (like the Empire), and the New Republic (which won the war with the Empire) is a single planet! Well, forgive me for not having racial perception as sharp as you western guys! The whole thing was just a stupid joke, referring to the meltdown the movie has seemingly caused among the manosphere and assorted neonazis. They seemed to keep a straight face during Fury Road, barring some exceptions, but here it seems it's gg, m8s! Well, this is the main problem with this film. I don't know if I liked this one enough to go watch the second one! The film was really propped up by the characters. I really liked Kylo Ren (or "Darth Crossguard", as I like to call him), chiefly because they made him so different then Vader was in the first movie. His character actually makes sense in the post-war Galaxy; last lonely dark Jedi, trying to live up to the foreboding legacy of Sith past, but being constantly foiled by his own awkwardness and inexperience. My favourite scene is when he boldly proclaims they don't need the droid, because he can magic the map out of Rey's mind. And then he fails. And has to face it. On the other hand, they completely wasted captain Phasma. In the first part of the film she seemed to be set up as a fiercely loyal and callous foil to Finn... but when she appears in the final part, she doesn't even resist when she's forced to lower the planet's shields! And then she's chucked offscreen.

Fair enough.
You know what? Fuck this movie. I can't vicariously live out my fantasies through any of these characters! The only white one is a woman, and I can't identify someone with genitalia that is different from me! And don't even get me started on skin colour! Ugh!
Yeah. That could be expected, couldn't it? Like the furor over a black Hermione Granger. They claim it is all about things like loyalty to the book, even though plays are famously fluid in how they are adapted, but they ignore the fact that the actor playing Ron isn't even a redhead.
Kylo Ren was one of the best parts. And one of the best ways that they didn't mirror the original. I loved him, and I have come to accept that the crossguard saber is actually both cool and effective... so long as those prongs on the side have a plasma stream going through them, as opposed to being emitted by them.

okay so I took me and the family to see it and I think the part of the night that stood out most was when my daughter looked up at me and said "that bad guy sucked he was really lame" I look at her is disbelief and asked why and she answered "he threw temper tantrums". I was of corse proud of her opinion on Kylo Ren, she's only 4 and already showing signs of cynicism.
honestly though not to bad a movie I guess, it sure didn't suck at least and as lame as Kylo was his light saber was cool and those side hilt things showed how they were useful by being used to stab when swords clash

I thought Kylo Ren was one of the best parts of the movie... precisely because he's got such problems. Makes him totally different from Vader. Your daughter IS right, though. Throwing such tantrums makes him pretty "lame" in the sense that the character is flawed, but doesn't mean he's not a good character.

I'm not the only one who saw that they rehashed nearly everything from Ep 4 it seems. I don't think it is really a coincidence Kylo's named Ben and Han shouted that right before he reenacted Ben Kenobi's death scene.
At least I can say the lightsaber fight looked less like glow-stick gymnastics and more like people actually trying to kill each other.
