I'm a pretentious spce ship model hipset, for whome regular models are not exclusive or braggable enough anymore. So my latest Imperial Fleet features loads of custom pieces made by a guy I know in France. The names are on a French theme, since that's where a lot of the pieces came from. The Battleship features custom side weapons and turrets on top. The prow angel is from a 40K vehicle and the one on the back is an old piece of jewellery. The angel prows are customn made, and are kind of the theme of the fleet. That Escort is clearly out of formation at the front! I hope the commissar on board takes appropriate action! My daughter took these pictures, and here she got a bit fancy with a cruiser doing a fly by. The escorts are all custom made from scratch. I know some seriously talented French people. And as a bonus- The Adeptus Arabites! These guys are the Judge Dredd types that enforce Imperial Law across the Imperium. The models are based on Space Marine Strike Cruisers. the prows are changed to custom ones with cool skulls and an additional Imperial bridge on the black.

I know I'd feel safe in a fleet with that many angels watching over it.

The saints of the Holy Emperor on Terra will surely protect anyone who wears the uniform of His Glorious Navy!

My hipster status aside, there is another reason I love this kind of alternate components. I have way too many ships, so I have tons of all the official ones. Just getting more of the same doesn't really excite me, cause I have em all on my shelf in many multiples. But the idea of a new spin on it, new versions with a unique look...that really gets my interest. Especially when I can make an entire fleet around a new style, to me that's really awesome.

I keep imagining the head of the angel on the flagship as the command center, with the admiral looking out the eyes to survey the battlefield.
And maybe the hands can lower and it shoots a big mega beam out the mouth.

I had that angel thing on a shelf for a few years, waiting to use it. It's such a perfect piece I knew it would have to be used eventually.

I can't help but think of the giant maid from Spaceballs.
What's the story on the skull in the fourth photo?

It is actually a novelty tape measure from games workshop. I got it at a games show one time. It doesn't work great as a tape measure as it doesn't hold out properly anymore, but I just think its a cool thing. I always like to have it near by to help get everyone in the 40K mood when we play BFG.

Yeah, there's a little bit of a skull motif going on with 40K, isn't there?

Just ever so slightly. If you look very closely, you might see the odd skull here and there. If you squint.

I just realized that tank is built backwards, if it's inspired by a WW1 British tank; those lozenge-shaped tanks had the higher part of the tracks at the front, to make it easier to climb hills and obstacles, and so they didn't dig themselves in when they went down a hill or over a wide trench.
Of course it is designed by guys who's idea of small arms include pistols the size of a man's torso that must weigh close to 20lbs.

You can see historical influences on tons of GW stuff in the past, as the people making it were all historical wargamers as well.
The modern models don't have that influence. You can kinda tell the new generation are getting their ideas from playing World of Warcraft and magic cards.
40K isn't about being practical. Building a space ship with guns on the side and a church on top is not practical. IT'S JUST FUCKING AWESOME!

Does that explain that thing you posted a while ago, a hovering chariot pulled by wolves?
