Yeah, that would be a good example of stand alone episode idea. When I say stand alone, the episodes do happen in order and events from one will be referenced in others. But some episodes are like big important ones. There are some key events and character moments that move things along. When I say lore, its not like super complicated. If you didn't know the characters and watched a "lore" episode I think you would figure out what is going on pretty fast. BUt these episodes are the pay off to everything that was set up before, as opposed to more stand alone episodes that introduce the situation and resolve it.
Though this isn't a hard distinction. Lots of episodes that resolve themselves introduce characters and concepts that are important later and bad guys or other characters we meet can show up later.
Maybe lore nad stand alone is the wrong phrase. Think of it more as normal episodes and key episodes. Like the really essential ones that change the dynamics in the show.

That's a good way to think about it, I think.
There are lots of complaints about "Filler" episodes sometimes these days, but I don't think that's always fair. Often those episodes do introduce something useful or important, after a fashion. And it can be fun on its own.

And plot twists don't really mean much if every episode has one so "filler" episodes which don't have them are necessary anyway.

When there not being a twist is itself a twist, things have gotten out of hand.

This reminds me a bit about something that happened in ECW: at one point after the promotion started cooperating with the WWF, manager/booking committee member Jim Cornette got contacted by ECW head Paul Heyman to make an appearance as the weekly surprise for a TV taping. Cornette's view is that it's not really a surprise if the audience knows something unexpected will happen (the appearance was linked to a feud which WWF commentator/wrestler Jerry "The King" Lawler was having with ECW at the time but I think Cornette only made the one appearance).
EDIT: <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k3vAZaS6wGI> has Jim discussing it.

Yeah, the complaining about "filler" nowadays is infuriating for the most part. People (I'd say "kids these days" but I'm pretty sure it's mostly our generation) forget that the original meaning of "filler" was episodes inserted by anime shows that started catching up too close to the manga they were adopting. The problem with them was that they were not done by the original creator, and also they simply could not be canon, because the adapted material didn't include them. That's completely different from a show just being episodic, but people flip out when a show takes an hour on anything else but the "saving the multiverse from space genocide" plot.

Sometimes I just like getting to know the characters a bit better. There isn't anything wrong with that.
And yes, it's not the kids these days, it's people my age. Screaming thirty-ish year old nerds.
I dunno. It's just that I don't think most of these internet commentator types actually share my personal taste in these things.

In the next episode Razor is tempted to perform immoral acts by his hot step mother.

Absolutely. (Though I might have over sold it now!) I found a good Director Remus song. See what you think.

This does suit him pretty well (it also fits for Persona 5's main antagonist).
