People are always prattling on about semi-auto rifles being so super spoopy, but a lever action can fire nearly as fast.

It's worse than a simple background check to buy ammunition. They want you to sign up on a state gun owners list before you can purchase any ammunition. The background check is on a federal level and isn't shared with the states. California wants a list of gun owners in their state. Something like a sex offenders list. They even want to make it available to the general public so you can go online and see how many evil gun owners are in your neighborhood.
The idea of a "bullet button" is pretty stupid. For one it makes it more difficult to render a loaded firearm safe, especially if you happen to have lost your tool. For two, disabling it is child's play. Any bad guy can do it.
California gun laws typically seem to be written by people who's only experience with firearms are what they see in movies.
Levers are pretty quick, a pump is faster. A revolver is actually capable of shooting faster than a semi auto since there's no cycling delay, though it's difficult to do.

So it is basically the same shit the Avengers fought a Civil War over, and the same shit the X-Men fought to put a stop to?
The reason they are so scared of guns is because they never shot one. It is just like driving a car, it seems scary but after you do it a time or two it loses the spook factor.
There are pump action rifles?

There are a few but they're not very common. Mostly .22 gallery style guns. Though Remington has long produced the 760 and 7600 in pumps, which are available in very hefty calibers such as .270, .308, and 30-06, among others.

What do you think the best thing would be to force anti-gun idiots to fire before making legislation?

I don't really want them making any legislation. Though I wouldn't start out like I did with a single shot 12 gauge. For starting out shooting pistols I've long considered the Bersa Thunder .380 a perfect starter gun. It's small, full function, seemingly non threatening, very easy to handle, exceptionally accurate, and more capable than a .22lr. The price point on it isn't intimidating either. The major downsides to the gun are lowish capacity, extra magazines are oddly expensive, the safety decocker is somewhat spooky, and the ammo isn't the cheapest or most efficient. For rifles .22s are always the best place to start and it's where most people have started. The Ruger 10/22 is probably the most popular rifle ever made... ...though Marlin may disagree and claim that title for the Model 60. Considering the aftermarket available for the 10/22 right now, it's a hard sell to say the Model 60 is even in the same league anymore, maybe 30 years ago it was. So you could give a legislator one of these. And then inform them that it's the same damn thing as the first one. Scary!

We have a national list of firearm owners, but my understanding is that the federal police (and likely local police) will know if you have a license if they run your plates or specifically look you up in the system, but that's absolutely not information available to the regional government, let alone the general public.
How do they think that's a good idea? It would just make it easier for thieves to target homes that have firearms, they'd just have to look people up on the list and track down their address.

It's shame legislation. They think that since the second amendment and US gun culture embarrasses them that we also must be embarrassed by it. That we live in closets polishing our guns and are afraid our family will find out our dark secret.
Not only does it endanger folks that own guns since they might be targeted by thieves that want them, but it also endangers folks that don't own guns. If you're not on the list chances are good your house is a safe target.

Got that M5 bayonet for my Garand, it's a lot smaller than the other bayonets I have, the blade isn't as wide as I was expecting and it's quite light, it feels more like a fighting knife than anything else. It's in very nice condition, the Parkerized coating it completely intact, the grips look good, it just needs to be sharpened.
I figure it'll be my new range knife; it's the only knife I have that fits on a rifle while being less than 20" long.

I think by the end of the Korean War the US military realized that a bayonet charge was a fairly rare occurrence and a bayonet that served as a field knife/fighting knife would be better.
Not entirely sure why bayonets are still part of modern equipment. I guess it has intimidation value.
Got my replacement scope mount in the mail today for the Mosin. Gotta pound the old sight off still. Seems I got one that has been soldered on so I'll prolly have to heat it up a bit. I was hoping the other mount would work out so I wouldn't have to do that.

I guess, must just be one of those things that they won't let go of because military rifles have always had bayonets. Still makes more sense than the Japanese sticking bayonets on LMGs in WW2;

Cuz I'm totally terrified that someone is gonna pick up that awkward 20 pound gun and charge my ass.
And is that a French bayonet on it?

Since we're talking about the Imperial Japanese Army, I wouldn't be surprised if that sometimes happened (although I'll wager it would work about as well as you'd expect).
But that's a Type 30 bayonet, the same one used on the Arisaka rifles (which is something else I need to get, Arisakas are pretty cool, and also use a Mauser action).
@demon; I kind of like how it looks, plus the Type 99 was one of the better MGs in WW2.

My dad has an Arisaka in his gun safe that he acquired from my grandfather. I'm not entirely sure about the story behind it, but my grandfather did serve in the Pacific during WWII. As far as I know neither my grandfather nor my father ever shot it. At some point someone crudely cut off the end of the barrel so the front sight is missing. I'm not sure if that was someone thinking they might sporterize it or if it was a field expediency fix by a soldier for a damaged barrel.
