I dunno. I don't find it particularly scary. Maybe that is because everything in 40K is already so fucked up and scary. Seriously. Being eaten by a lizardbug isn't that terrifying. Maybe I'm just desensitized. And maybe I should also be desensitized to "plans within plans, two great houses..." Dune level crap too. I mean, Tzeench does that shit all the damn time. But Tzeench is chronically underused. I'm no longer impressed by cosmic threats and horrors that are incomprehensible to mortal men, at least when it comes to 40K.
Also, if the Shadow over the Warp thing succeeds, that means once everyone is dead, maybe the Warp will revert to normal, or at least lack demons, which would make the Old Ones' return more viable.
I guess it is just that I see plot twists everywhere, and this is one of the more obvious possible ones in 40K.

Dear god, I should just ask myself what I do like about 40K.
I'm not even sure.
I guess it would be the personality of some of the factions. And I'm not even sure I mean their actual behaviour either. The Dark Eldar are one of my favourites nowadays, but not because of their mass murdering, torturing, and overall bastardy. I like their sleekness, their actual fighting and even visual (minus fucking skulls everywhere) style. The idea of them in certain ways.
The Eldar... I liked because space elves. Not just that they were elves physically, but the idea of an ancient race that is ancient and wise and noble and other crap like that. Eventually their arrogance, terrible social skills, and general terribleness disillusioned me of them. Or maybe I grew out of them.
The Imperial Guard are kinda neat because I like lasers and they're the Batman of 40K. The best thing about Batman is he is somewhat clever, but also mainly he is a regular human in comparison to his peers and most of his foes. Imperial Guard are like that.

I was never super keen on Eldar because they make everything feel futile. Them being a dying race is fair enough, but they literally have an after life where the bad guy eats their souls. That always seemed kinda dumb but also so hopeless as to make me want to shrug and give up.
As I said, your Old Ones make tyranids plan could be the case, but it seems unlikely and I would honestly be disappointed if they went with that. My response would be something like "Oh, thats all the tyranids are?" Just doesn't add anything good to anyone involved.
What do I like about 40K? The space ships, obviously!

Yeah, the Eldar have it bad. Though their afterlife is only Slaanesh eating their souls if the soul isn't captured by a soulstone at death. If that happens, and the Eldar plug it into the infinity matrix... then Eldar afterlife is actually a very boring version of the Wachowski's "Matrix." No wonder they like coming back to kill things in wraithbone constructs.
Ultimately though, I don't care much for the Eldar now because they have the same flaw as the Jedi. They're as dedicated as possible to controlling and not expressing emotions, or doing so as little as they can. They've got a better excuse than the Jedi, as Slaanesh and its daemons show up to eat them if they do, but that doesn't make it any less... meh. At least the Dark Eldar have fun. Terrible, evil, fun, but still fun.
I disagree. But it doesn't matter one way or another, I can't see GW actually announcing anything one way or the other.

So the Eldar are elves, but in space? And the orcs are obviously orcs, but in space.
That seems kind of disappointing. They could have created something new, populated the galaxy with any number of original and just plain different species, but they just took two species that are a staple of the fantasy genre, and put them in space.

In their defence, over time the 40K races have evolved to the point of being really strange and fair interesting in their own right.
The orks are barbaric, but instinctively know how to make weapons, organise armies and all of that stuff. They also constantly emit spors that make more of themselves everywhere they go. These things combine to make them an ideal army of super aggressive warriors who instinctively want to be at war with everything ever.
The eldar also have some fun ideas of them being a dying race that lives in floating super ships called "craft worlds" and have loads of psychic powers. They grow their equipment out of stuff called "wraith bone" that is psychoactive plastic, which is pretty cool.
But yes, these days it feels like if they were entirely original creatures it would probably be better.
Still...the ships look cool! I gotta get painting and gluing and post some more pictures.

You know...
This might seem odd...
But the Eldar Culture would be more interesting if it actually WAS a straight rip off of Tolkien's High Elves. Instead they're just kind of depressing.
They do have some neat twists to them as an army and so on, admittedly. And the Orks too (plus, they're definitely different from Tolkien orcs in build and such).

Came across this... Pretty much sums it all up.

So, when I was going through this I'd look up stuff you were talking about (because I know nothing about Warhammer or 40K).
First of all, I noticed that a lot of people use absolutely massive firearms (and they scream while using them. This makes sense, I'd probably scream too if I fired a 20mm "assault rifle" from the hip), stuff that should probably tear the shit out of personal armour.
But people also use swords, and maces, and other weapons like that. Why? I can understand including it in a game because it looks cool, but how do they explain the in-world reasons why dudes arrive at the battlefield in spaceships and then proceed to fight with battleaxes?
