I remember when Necrons used to be cool.
In the background, they were once a high advanced race who were cursed with cancer ridden bodies and a bitter hatred with an even more powerful race called the Old Ones.
Their bitterness was such that they traded their lives to the C'Tan, evil star gods who made them into immortal mechanical skeleton warriors.
The price was that the C'tan fed on their life force and reduced their new minions to unfeeling killing machines, whose only purpose was to hunt down more life for their insane gods to feed on.
The C'tan viewed life in the universe the same way a heroine addict would view a giant sack of grade A Columbian, and proceeded to destroy 98% of life in the universe.
Realising they were on the cusp of getting permanently cut off from their next life fix, the C'Tan and their robot armies went into a deep sleep, buried under the ground on various planets.
Now, millions of years later they have awakened to find a veritable buffet of delicious species on which to pig out on and their mechanised hordes have been abducting people to experiment one, aiming to master ways to convert them into new types of Necron as part of their elaborate plans to consume the souls of literally everything that lives.
Millions of self repairing, teleporting, mechanised killers, marching in lock step, backed up with ridiculously advanced ancient technology.
So pretty bad ass then.
Or on the other hand, why not just make them all space Egyptians?
So in this version they had loads of dynasties that were always fighting each other, ruled by powerful kings with lots of poor peasants toiling for them (not sure how that kind of society would get super advanced at science...)
The ancient war against the Old Ones was done as an excuse to get them to stop fighting each other.
Near the end of the war, the Necrons leader realised that the C'Tan were dicks, and so double crossed and destroyed them. Phew! That's one less cosmic horror to fret about!
He realised the Necrons were pretty spent from destroying the Old Ones and the C'Tan, and that the Eldar (space elves) who used to serve the old ones were getting pretty powerful. So he decided they should all sleep for millions of years. When they woke up, hopefully the eldar would be weaker some how? Even though the Necrons would have degraded after all those millions of years and a lot of them now don't work too great.
The Necron minions are still pretty mindless, as they got the cheaper, crappier robot bodies. The Necron Lords that rule them still have their personalities are are quite a varied bunch.
One of them loves collecting rare artefacts (it's great to have a hobby), while another one of them is a bit crazy and thinks his modern enemies are ancient rebellious Necron Kings and so treats all prisoners really well.
The evil experiments seem to basically have just been one one Necron guy whose a dick and likes doing evil experiments.
Their top guy is a mighty general who uses such perfect logic that he has never been defeated.
He always spares honourable enemies who impress him in single combat and has been defeated several times recently.
Yes both those sentences were about the same guy, why do you ask?
One time, the blood angels space marines were fighting some Necrons on a planet when the Tyranids (evil Geiger style alien horrors) showed up.
Naturally, when face with such seriously scary bad asses as the Tyranids, the Necrons opted to team up with the Blood Angels. After the battle, the two sides parted ways, the Blood Angels gaining respect for the Necrons and, I like to imagine, giving them a bro fist bump.
The Necrons are now motivated by a desire to restore their previous Empire (not an unreasonable thing to want really.) I dunno if they allow other people in their empire, I don't know how that works.
The weird human based Necrons aren't in it any more...so that's a relief. I mean that made them kinda scary, and less loveable.
Necrons used to be the nightmarish first version...they have now been ret-conned into version two.
They aren't scary, they aren't as interesting and they don't really make any sense in several places.
Also on the models they now keep showing necrons sat in seats piloting vehicles which they never used to do. They used to either have no visible crew or the crew was built into the machine, like their legs replaced with a hovering platform.
The image of a machine whose purpose is to drive another machine is so laughably stupid it verges on high camp.
You see this is cool-
This looks funny-
The background was so perfect before! It tied into lots of things that had been hinted at before and created a well thought through, legitimate threat that was different to other things in the 40K universe. It even made me over look the fact they are obviously knock offs of the movie terminator.
Or space Egyptians.
Who have Phaeron's.
Like robot pharaoh.
Yeah....
