Most of the punches and kicks are so telegraphed and obvious that only a fool would actually be hit by them though. I found some actual mail in Once Upon a Time, too bad the obviously plastic "armor" is so obviously plastic: Hey! Bulletproof armor is plastic, isn't it? They have way better armor than most medieval knights.

Bullet resistant armor is a kevlar composite generally on the lower end of things, with various hard materials often serving as reinforcement such as AR500 steel (coated in a rubbery plastic to catch the bullet fragments) or more often ceramic plating which shatters the bullet (and the kevlar/composite material behind the ceramic catches the fragments). The Japanese attempted to weave some mail armor that was bullet resistant (using a dense 6-1 triple ply star pattern setup, which is actually a much easier setup to weave than standard 4-1).
Most kevlar is actually not so great against cutting weapons, and if I recall right some have been reinforced with mail to help with knife attacks. It does make me wonder what weapons/armor would look like today if there were no firearms.
