After a bit of deliberation, Hark and I went over the components of the game to see if we could make the game more affordable. As awesome as plastic coins with stickers and buckets of dice and beads are, it would mean the cost of the game would be significantly higher than it could be. Our solution was to move the more expensive game pieces to a special 'Deluxe Upgrade' pack (which will include all the of original pieces we had planned) and have the basic game come with card counters instead. Here's what the card counters will look like (the blood splats are Damage Tokens and the purple one is a Reinforce Token): and how they will look on a card (also a size comparison): We will also be removing D20's from the basic game because they are more of a play aide than an actual needed game piece (you can also use any dice you own as markers in place of these if you want). Here is a default example of how the pieces look in real life (though with different images on obviously): The Damage and Reinforce Tokens will be like this: And the Sovereign coins will be on thicker card on these sheets:

That's a neat way to save money, good thinking!

It's cheaper but also gives the option to add more fancy stuff for the complete experience.

Looks like I'll be buying the basic game then. As a totally unrelated note, I might use H:CoN for the nefarious purpose of leveling the playing field with my friends, because we usually play collectible card games. And surprisingly enough, my friends who play most often are those who have spent the most money on cards, and usually have access to the newest cards as well... or occasionally I get to play against totally new people with starter decks. In either case, the games are uneven. If I want to play a balanced game, I have to convince my friends to build decks of similar power to my own... or I'd have to tailor my deck to the starter decks when playing against newbies. Which would be a lot of work. Why physical cards don't have this nice feature of "save deck", "load deck" with a single click? So I hope H:CoN will be able to solve at least some of those issues

One of the main reasons for making Clash of Nations a game that comes complete in a box was the way our group deals with CCGs. We generally just pool all our collections together and create all the decks to the same power level because not everyone wants to keep piling money into a game, and inevitably we would share cards and not play stuff that was considered overpowered.
When Living Card Games came out, I was expecting it to be the way Clash of Nations is, where you only needed to buy 1 of each box, but there would be future releases that you can buy 1 of each and have the full set. They generally dont work out this way and you have to buy multiple copies of the basic game in order to build competitive decks, which I thought was a shame.
Clash of Nations was made so it was like a board game (we were originally not planning on making more than 4 races or selling it) and you would buy 1 copy and have everything – much like you wouldn't expect people to buy 2 copies of monopoly in order to play 'properly'.
The main reason for this is the race decks come pre-made (25 cards in each one) and the cards are available for each player to use. There isn't only one copy of a powerful 'rare' card in the game that every player needs 3 or 4 of.

This is a great point and is exactly right. This isn't a game where players can spend more money to get an unfair advantage. Spending more on the game enhances the experience and options for everyone. Have 20 harko points for drawing attention to this.
