Basically, a question and a proposition.
Up until very recently all URLs posted to this forum would be going through viglink (ie. the url was replaced with something like "http://viglink.com?redirect=<original url>" (I don't remember the exact url and parameters). That link would redirect to the original link's destination, but presumably also send something to viglink for advertisement purposes.
I was going to complain about these things, but they're gone now. And I don't know if something in this forum changed, or in my browser's blocker addons.
And the second thing, kind of connected to the previous one (but the weird redirects are gone now, so...).
The forum is pretty comfortable to use due to its simplicity, I'll grant it that, but it kind of misses some security features. Like https. And not having intrusive ads that redirect all links...
The art of forums is kind of dead these days (most forums I still see have baroque setups that aim to emulate some "social media" features), but surely, we could do something to have a secure, ad-less forum?
The second part of the proposition is as follows: we, the few forum regulars, could help fund these features. Hark was asking for donations lately, so I thought: since there is so few of us, but we spend quite some time here (especially since the RPs we know and like are conducted here), maybe it would make sense to upgrade the forum beyond what free boards offer and share the cost of upkeep?
What do you people think? Is such thing possible? Would it be desirable?
