The Cansaibe resemble cheatahs and have a west african look to their culture.
The Cansaibe homelands are in the south east of Jaydia.
Until recently the Cansaibe were a semi nomadic people, guarding their territory but building few permanent settlements in it.
The Cansaibe are a warrior race, and put great importance in personal honour.
Historically a patriarchal culture, the preasure to save face is especially heavy on Cansaibe men, who keenly feel anything that might bring shame on themselves.
Cansaibe kings must not only worry about personal honour, but the honour of the entire Cansaibe race. For this reason the Cansaibe have engaged in many wars throughout their history, as a King can never be seen to show weakness or cowardice in the face of provocation.
In times long past the Cansaibe warred with the Shulway, destroying their ancient kingdom and exiling them from eastern Jaydia.
One day, from Vellastrom came the Tolpish. They were also a warrior race, and as proud as the Cansaibe. They had left their homeland rather than be conquered. Now they travelled across Jaydia, seeking a new homeland. When the Tolpish travelled across the Cansaibe homelands, the Cansaibe considered this an unacceptable trespass and Cansaibe warriors harassed the Tolpish refugees ceaselessly.
Between the hardships of their journey and the Cansaibe attacks, the Tolpish would have been destroyed, if not for the protection of the Gotetra God Emperors armies.
The Gotetra had long been friendly with the Tolpish, but the Tolpish would not accept another race ruling over them and so had moved on to find their own homeland.
The Cansaibe would not let them settle anywhere in their territory, and eventually the Tolpish travelled beyond the mountains, where they could finally settle in relative peace.
Ironically, it would be in finally accepting another race's authority over them that the Tolpish would become their most powerful. As servants of the dreaded Knarl, the Tolpish grew in strength and number.
Fifteen years ago they unleashed a sudden and terrible attack series of attacks against the Cansaibe. Achieving complete surprise, the Tolpish scattered the Cansaibe armies and in a few short months had captured the kings palace.
Many in the Tolpish armies were actually disappointed with how easy their victory had been. They had anticipated a fierce battle in which they would gain glory, but instead resistance had collapsed almost immediately.
This disastrous defeat has led to the reputation in Jaydia that the Cansaibe are a race of cowards, and filled the Tolpish with contempt for them (perhaps in part as an after the fact justification for the Tolpish's military aggression.)
To a proud race like the Cansaibe, this humiliation was incomprehensible. The Cansaibe were now slaves, their royal family executed, their populations forcibly settled, with many of them shipped off to work as labourers in far off parts of the Knarl Empire.
Many Cansaibe fled their old homeland and they are now found as refugees across Western Jaydia. This creates another stereotype of the Cansaibe as poor beggars needing hand outs.
Though the conquest of the Cansaibe had proved very easy for the Tolpish, ruling them would prove far more difficult.
The Cansaibe intensely resent being enslaved and there is constant resistance to Tolpish rule.
Bands of Cansaibe warriors make travel between towns and cities dangerous in large areas of former Cansaibe territory. Cansaibe civilians are uncooperative, sabotaging construction work and being as unhelpful as possible, while giving support to Cansaibe rebels in secret. They disrespect Tolpish authority, going to their own judges, applying ancient Cansaibe laws, rather than to their Tolpish over lords to settle disputes. Cansaibe who are seen as collaborating with the Tolpish are hated by their fellows and sometimes even killed.
The Tolpish invariably respond with extreme brutality, but are unable to break the Cansaibe's fighting spirit.
The Tolpish are now convinced that the secret to finally forcing the Cansaibe to submit lies in capturing Craggarg, the Cansaibe's rightful king. He was a prince at the time the Cansaibe were conquered and was away fighting in a terrible war in Jaydia. Now he has returned and is viewed as a hero by his people, leading their warriors in resistance against the oppressors.
Craggarg is a battle hardened leader, and Tolpish efforts to capture him have so far all ended in failure. Though the Tolpish have forbidden the Cansaibe to so much as speak of Craggarg, his legend continues to grow.
Not all Cansaibe rebels are so heroic, some are little more than bandits fighting in their own self interest, attacking their own people or other peoples as much as the Tolpish. Others go to even further extremes, such as the nihilistic cultists of the Silent Gate.
Under such great hardship, some aspects of Cansaibe culture have broken down, such as their previously strict gender divides. A lot more roles are now open to women, especially as warriors, though men are still seen as the providers and head of the family. It is a common practice that Cansaibe men swear an oath to marry the wives of any of the comrades that die in battle, thus becoming obligued to support those women and their children. Craggarg himself has dozens of wives and a vast number of adopted children through these arrangements.
Prior to the Tolpish invasion, Cansaibe settlements were ruled by judges, who were appointed by the King from tribal elders respected for their wisdom. The judges settled disputes and insured the law was carried out. Cansaibe laws were harsh, with many penalties involving floggings, cutting off hands and executions for many crimes. Under the Tolpish the rank of judge is not officially recognised, but they continue to act as community leaders amongst the Cansaibe in secret.
The Cansaibe have a relatively low level of technology, a little lower than that of the Tolpish. Their warriors commonly use hardened animal hide shields, and hurls javelins in battle, while using kukri's for close combat. Cansaibe fighting is mainly based around ambush and skirmishes, rather than massed battles, which makes them well suited to fighting against an occupying force.
Cansaibe warriors of great skill can use their dark magic to teleport sort distances. Some utilise their most feared technique, when the warrior gathers all his magic and (if he is not killed immediately) detonates himself in an explosion of dark and fire magic. This attack is devastating, but using it kills a highly trained warrior, so it is a costly weapon to use.
One of the few foreign nations to have much sympathy for Cansaibe are the Al-Saigal, who see the Cansaibe as fellow followers of Thane and admire their struggle against great odds. The Al-Saigal also despise slavery, and have never liked the Godless Tolpish, refusing to let them settle on the Great Savannah as this was too clsoe to the Sultanates borders. Many Al-Saigal provide material support in secret to the Cansaibe, with a few even travelling to fight alongside them against the Knarl Empire.
Despite long years of brutal occupation, the Cansaibe still keep the dream of their nation alive, and believe that one day their king will return from his exile and retake his throne.
(I have info on their religion written in a note book that I need to find, then I will add that info on.)
