Very early on, way way back when the world was young and I was even younger...I first came up with Harkovast.
The world of Harkovast didn't have a name (it got called 'Dan's Campaign World') but it had lots of fun ideas going on.
The main races were-
Dwarves (like typical fantasy ones)
cat people
Fox People
Bird people
lizard people
Rat people
Storm Wolves
Yes,they were just called "animal person".
The regular animals were just regular real world animals. So the world had normal foxes and then also fox people.
With me so far?
So what the fuck is a Storm Wolf?
Extra big, none anthropomorphic wovles that could talk.
They ran around in packs and used magic to make armour for themselves with blades one (the whole "each race gets two elements" thing did not exist at this point.) They also had lightning related powers and a general connection to storms (chasing across the landscape after storms kinda thing.)
Now these were a pretty weird idea and were hard to include in stuff since they couldn't really function in normal societies.
So they gradually fell by the way side and featured very little.
When I came back to the setting as an adult and revamped it, they were left out...mostly...
You see there was a period where Junlocks were given the ability to turn into "giant wolf" form using their life magic.. The ones that could do this were called "storm wolves", and were like elite warriors and could ride on transformed ones into battle like weird cavalry.
This eventually got dropped for a few reasons.
1- It was pretty goofy. Guys riding on each other sets up too many jokes.
2- Frost Bersekers were invented and they were massively cooler. So no one gave a fuck about some guy changing into a wolf, they wanted more Frost Berserkers, so any time I wanted to have Junlock elite warriors they were going to be Frost Berserkers instead.
3- As we all know now, Harkovast moved away from real world animals, meaning that people in the setting don't think of themselves as "animal people".
So the idea that Junlocks would refer to their transformed shape as "storm wolves" didn't make sense as they didn't know what a wolf was!
This also meant that the Junlocks turning into actual wolves seemed strange, as no other Harkovast race does something relating to an animal form in that way.
The were a strange idea, but obviously they don't fit with what Harkovast became.
Its important to remember that when Harkovast began, I didn't have a definitive idea of what it was meant to be.
Stuff happened like gods interracting with characters directly that would seem horribly jarring in the current version.
There were orcs and humans as bad guys! It was a strange time!
