You're a bad influence.

Haha, much like Hark doesn't have a favourite race because he likes them all, I don't have a favourite race because I hate them all.
(Actually when Harkovast was first made, a lot of the races were just ill-defined 'bad' races that the heroes beat up, but that was quickly changed. I find it fun to just refer to those races as dirty races that aren't 'proper' like Darsai and Tsung-Dao.)

How long ago was that?

A long time ago (in a galaxy far far away).
Ooh story time (til Hark deletes this post for revealing too much!
Harkovast has gone through 3 Ages:
Waaaaay back in the day (Age 1), it was originally a more generic fantasy with a few animal races bolted on (like Skyrim and the khajiit or whatever). This was made when we were kids.
Age 2, a lot of things got defined and the full world was being created with lots of races and stuff (This is where the races began to be developed from just 'bad' and 'good') A lot of it was vague because you don't come up with a full world overnight. Partway through Hark came up with the name 'Harkovast' which was weird to us because it was always just 'That fantasy world wot he made'
Age 3 is when the comic was first made and lots of things get set in stone. (though lots of stuff still get added!)

Noooo! He's giving away all the secrets! Don't listen to the apostate! Harkovast came down to me on tablets of stone from Thane after I killed dragon that one time! Don't listen to his lies to the contrary!
Here is something interesting- Version 1 races Good- Cat people Lizard people Wild lizard people (what would become brorg-dao) Fox people bird people Dwarves Storm Wolves (like regular four legged wolves but they were bigger and could talk....fuck that was a stupid idea.)
Bad- Humans (oooh social commentary there, young Daniel!) Orcs Goblins Beastmen (like goat dudes from warhammer) Elves (who came from another dimension)
Version 2 races- Good- Darsai (they get proper names now) tsung-dao Ano-chee Nymus Brorg-Dao A few others that got dropped that I wont give due to spoilers. Ano-Kim (and early proto-type for anzlov that were taken out then added in again later.)
Bad- Junlock Ivos Golta Onrapa Zadakine Komus Nameless
The jump between version 1and 2 was quite stark and my adult self decided to revisit the world I had dreamed up and revamp it. The evolution to version 3 was more gradual, though the comic starting was a fairly land mark step in its progression.

Originally they were meant to be bad guys to give the heroes someone to beat up on, but over time I started thinking about them more and they evolved.
Also I think (and this is probably a surprising revelation) the Iraq war influenced my thinking about them. Terrorism is bad and we all know its bad and all terrorists are assholes etc etc. But I could also see ways in which the west was creating the conditions that allowed terrorism to thrive. We were doing shitty things to muslims in Iraq, who hadn't done anything wrong and had nothing to do with terrorism, and then asking why these people would start hating us. It had a very profound effect on me, and I think from that evolved this idea that maybe there was more than one side to a lot of the things happening in the world and we didn't have the only valid narrative. In the same way, I started to think about how things looked from the Junlock perspective, and how they would characterise what was happening. They kind of elevated them from the Orcs of Harkovast into something more meaningful.
Also playing Total War (of course) gave me more ideas for different cultures and as I added more to the different cultures it became harder and harder to justify them as simply "villains" who universally deserved destruction.
I had a bit in the rpg where a character was given the option to attack a Golta convoy. There was no specific crime attributed to the Golta, just that they were clearly up to no good and needed to be attacked. My friend went along with this enthusiastically and didn't see any problem, because he had been told that Golta are the baddies and you are meant to fight them. Makes ya think.

Wait... does this mean that the Ivos, Golta, Zadakine, and Komus are all going to side with the West in the actual story?
Because then the good guys are going to lose. Bad.
Anyway, I can definitely see the Total War influence in Harkovast, it is really quite pronounced.

Clearly, the US needs to elect more Republicans if that is the case.

Honestly, if they don't get Obama out soon I am going to have to pack this comic lark in. I'm almost entirely out of ideas. In the last US election I based the entirety of chapter 8 on things Mitt Romney said. But since he lost, the well of ideas is running dry!
