Exactly.
Though I hated Jar Jar as a kid because I played the computer game, and the fucker made you follow him about through the most obnoxious jumps...

I totally understand the hate for him, but I'm also someone who can honestly say Clone Wars is one of my favorite movies. it's the Trilogy I grew up with, I had never even seen the originals till maybe 2006-2007.

Ah. I saw the old trilogy because my parents had me watch it before the prequels came out.
Episode 2 was bad in my mind, though the character designs were pretty great. I thought the clones were really cool when I saw the movie.
The Clone Wars TV show, though, was actually pretty good.

I like the Star Wars prequels for reasons that apparently the majority hate them.
i love the original 5 minute episodes that played when I was a kid, they were just so amazing, and the new series is also pretty awesome to watch and very enjoyable.

Each to their own.
I love how the Jedi are shown to be incredibly flawed and probably for the best that they got wiped out. That is my favorite thing about the prequels.
Also, yeah, the 2D animation one (earlier one) was pretty great. And the newer one got to be actually quite good. It tells you something when they managed to make Anakin my favourite non-clone character. Anakin. I couldn't stand him in the movies.
Though the 2D one, they did Grievous right and terrifying. The new Grievous was... just meh. I couldn't take him seriously.

as a kid I thought General Grievous was the coolest thing ever and is still hands down one of my all time favorite characters ever. he looks really cool and was just awesome to see fight.

He was visually impressive. And the 2D Cartoon made him not just fun to watch fight, with a great design, but also a terrifying villain. He seemed dangerous, brilliant, and capable.
But in the movie and newer Cartoon? What happened to the cool moves, the "thinking in curves" fight style? Instead of odd movements and clever positioning, he just spun his hands around at Obi-wan. The choreography wasn't even good... sure, that was probably because CGI and poor Ewan McGregor had no idea what he was supposedly looking at while filming. But STILL. It was, for the younger me, the biggest letdown of Revenge of the Sith.
And in the newer cartoon, Grievous is routinely embarrassed by children. The only good part about that is you can feel pleased Anakin probably ended up killing all of them.

yeah he's definitely more imposing a figure in the original 5 minute clone wars episodes. though he's definitely a stand out character in the prequels

A fascinating design, he stood out quite nicely. And was one of my favourites in Star Wars Battlefront 2.

It was a good way of hearkening back to how the lightsaber is a more "civilized" weapon.
The new one seems a little light on content, honestly. I want to play it, but I fear I'll have to do so after it has been out long enough to warrant a sale.

Found an interview with Ahmed Best covering both Jar Jar's reputation as well as this theory, it's actually a little depressing, but I'd say it's pretty interesting overall for all the behind the scenes stuff that they talk about, not to mention it's worth it just to hear his take on Darth Jar Jar:
And if you want to skip to just the Darth Jar Jar voice:
