In the Exorcist, a guy warns that the devil mixes truth with his lies to make them more believable.
He had a good point.
The best way to push a lie is to have it be based on an element of truth. A complete fiction won't get traction but something that is partially true, or related to the truth, that can stick.
I had seen footage before of Black Live Matters protesters chanting that they wanted cops killed. It was presented as damning evidence of how dangerous the movement was, and looked pretty convincing.
I, and others, referred to these videos else where on the forum.
Looking into further though, I've found out that while this footage is real (those are black protestors calling for killing cops) they are NOT from BLM. Those videos are from 2014, before BLM formed.
So the event did happen, but its being misrepresented in a key way to push an anti BLM message.
I have problems with BLM, with some extreme views and racist dogma getting touting by some sections of it and with the effectiveness of some of their methods, so I am not a cheer leader who automatically takes their side by any means.
But the crowds chanting to kill cops are NOT from them and its INCREDIBLY under handed to misrepresent footage to make this appear to be the case.
Another example was after the Democrat National Convention in America had its emails leaked. A story circulated saying that there was a racist one that referred to Latinos as "Taco bowls", showing the democrats are racists who just take minority votes for granted but don't really care about them.
The evidence was right there and seemed pretty damning...until you realise that what the email was talking about was Donald Trump's ham fisted effort to get Latino support by eating a taco bowl in Trump tower. There were mocking the idea of doing "taco bowl out reach", not using it as a serious term!
I was outraged about the DNC emails and the shady practices they revealed, but trying to claim some kind of anti latino message that wasn't there is sleazy in the extreme!
So right wingers are liars and you can't trust em...but us lefty liberals are okay, right?
Don't get too comfortable.
Recently Trump has been being lambasted by the left for saying that he wanted Russia to help him did up Clintons Emails. People are calling him a traitor and saying he needs to go to prison for inviting a foreign power to steal American intelligence.
Look at this shocking quote that has been doing the rounds-
"Russia, if you're listening, I hope you're able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing, I think you will probably be rewarded mightily by our press,"
GASP! Trump is a filthly traitor who is calling in his evil commie buddies to help him!
What the media left out, however, is a bit of context...
It takes a bit of digging but prior to that Trump said he was not certain Russia was behind the hack and "if it is Russia, it's really bad for a different reason, because it shows how little respect they have for our country when they would hack into a major party and get everything."
Taken in context his request that he help find the deleted emails was clearly not a serious suggestion, but a way of mocking Hillary and her many deleted emails from her private server scandal.
It was "You want to talk about emails? What about HER emails?" kinda thing.
To act as if it was a serious suggestion is insulting.
The emails are deleted at this point, so hacking right now wouldn't find them anyway, so as a serious idea it doesn't even make logical sense. Are we claiming Trump thinks Russia can hack back in time like Kung-Fury? Maybe they think he is implying Russia already have the emails...but in that case its not a call to hack anyone as it already happened. The situation only makes sense as him making a sarcastic dig at his opponent.
Trump is an ass, you don't have to distort what he meant to make up bullshit attacks.
These lies are especially dangerous because at first glance they seem to have evidence behind them. You can see the quotes, you can watch the video and it seems to say what they claim. You have to dig under the surface to realise you are being tricked.
We get so much information so rapidly these days that its very easy to feed lies into the narrative. Be wary of everything, check things out before accepting them at face value.
You are almost certainly being deceived about more things than you think.
