*waves finger* Yanno what this makes me think of a bit? The idea that H.P Lovecraft's books were really about racism, instead of horror. The enemy isn't the big obvious squidbat dude, it's the other-wise normal people who secretly pray for him? ...I dunno if this thought makes sense the way I've said it and I'm not sure 100% where I'm going with this... But the thing about Blue Tribe/Red Tribe being stronger then out-an-out rascism makes me think of League of Legends, and how atm, for the most part, everybody hates Yasuo. I'd argue it's more that Yasuo is one of those champions that becomes super-flashy when he's truly skilled/impactful when he's ahead, and thus, much more memorable then say, this random Evelynn that for some reason went mid and kept killing the Fizz before roaming to cause more havoc. Maybe this additional example helps show what I'm trying to get at?

Interesting read.
I remember reading an Essay in Grade 11 written by a former ace IB student about how tolerance is a bad thing. Not just because it means you accept evil things, but because it was not exactly embracing, now is it? Of course that IB student and a friend of his murdered his parents for their inheritance money, figuring they could pull off the "perfect crime". I'm not sure he gets much moral credence.
This is a mostly effective essay, although I think it misses some of the nuance. People rarely say "I can't tolerate _____________ group." Rather it is those beliefs or activities that end up embraced by those groups. So someone saying "I can't tolerate intolerance" is not necessarily saying they can't tolerate the "out group." But this is a minor quibble, as it seems things like political identifications definitely affect decision making.
I have seen a lot of this kind of thing happen, though. This is something that especially seems to happen in those atheist circles where before you know it they start screaming up things like "religious folks are mentally damaged and incapable of reason!"
I think that a lot of this is down to being unable to really understand, or accept the existence of, other perspectives. Perhaps "unable" is too strong a word, but "dislike the idea of" works. The whole idea that we might be wrong often bothers us, and when other people challenge our beliefs, it can sometimes feel like an attack on us.
Ironically I find that what bothers me most in other people is an inability to be civil or respect other perspectives, when they refuse to accept that they are possibly wrong or demand that they must absolutely be correct. This inability to tolerate the ambiguity of knowledge legitimately pisses me off. It is why I can have a generally polite (if sometimes frustrating) conversation with an honest to god Trump supporter who thinks Climate Change is a hoax, trans people are problematic, and so forth. Said person may believe that they are right (as do I), but they do not take offence to someone believing something different from them.
Indeed, that is the problem. When you are incapable of "tolerating" that people believe differently from you. Tolerating behaviour your consider to be abhorrent is probably not good, after all, I wouldn't tolerate murdering folks or beating up gay people. But accepting that other people can be just as good or smart as you while disagreeing with you is important.

Also, Riven mains and their tendency towards toxicity... etc. Lots of League of Legends stereotypes out there. So basically, the more subtle thing going on gets ignored for the bigger flashy thing? But I think I get what you mean. The Lovecraftian Squidbat isn't the actually problem. It is literally the most alien thing to humanity as possible. But really the enemies to humanity are other humans per se.

Certainly interesting, can't say it really gave me pause for thought though. I know more than a few liberals who hate everything said by conservatives on principle and seem to think that people who hold conservative values are idiots, likewise I know more than a few stereotypical conservatives who feel the same way about liberals, and who get more worked up talking about liberals than they do talking about gays, Muslims, minorities, etc., it's not something I noticed before, but now that I've read this article, yeah, I can see it.
I think I saw a show about that; they beat his folks to death with bats and tried to make money off of a screenplay based on the murders?

Yeah Renard, that's about right too.
As for the IBers... I'm not sure, but that sounds about right. All I know is that it was when I was in Grade 11, so... huh, quite some time ago.
