I've mocked the idea of cultural appropriation on here before, but now I am having a rethink. What made me reconsider if this problem should be taken more seriously is a news story about a particularly shocking example. I think what made this one so upsetting is that it was a member of my own race and cultural group doing it. Copying black hair styles is never acceptable!I hope this individual can check their privilege in future.

My immeadiate impression was that the cat had sprouted furry tentacles. Wow. More interesting, perhaps, is has this sort of thing happened in Harkovast between the races? I mean, beyond however the West works...Seems like it wouldn't, since most races tend to be stuck up their own butts about how awesome their race is.

I think you're misinterpreting it, Hark.
It's the reporter who appropriated dreadlocks in order to make a comparison to a cat's fur! In this way, he created an impression that almost anything could sprout dreadlocks, therefore being guilty of erasure.

I figure you might find some people adopting things from other races as a fashion statement, it'd be exotic, although I expect doing so would probably be frowned upon in a lot of cultures (being too enthusiastic about foreigners, etc.).
I imagine Zadakine might have a thing for foreign goods, like yowboo and Junlock jewellery for example; they're not very nationalistic, and enjoying imported luxuries would be one way to show how wealthy you are.

People in harkovast import other peoples stuff sometimes, if they find it entertaining or useful. harkovast is a world where casual racism isnt a big deal, becuase they are kind of medievalish mostly. People throw around what to us would be racial slurs and don't mean anything by it a lot of the time. Sir Muir cheerfully refers to Nymus as "beaks" for example, and most nymus would probably think that was not okay but its the way their world is. SO the idea of them getting offended at other people borrowing from their culture seems unlikely, unless it was something very sacred to them.
Interestingly, the best example I can think of is the gotetra, who will incorportate new gods into their theology, which can be baffling and exasperating for others (the zadakine didn't know what to make of it!)

I thought of an example in the comic! When they went to the Tsung-Dao town they all got Tsung-Dao clothes to wear. Tsung-Dao culture is viewed as backward and boring by most outsiders, so most people aren't especially interested in adoptin aspects of it. Interestingly, the character who didn't wear the tsung-dao gear was Ki, who was being a dick and sneering at the Tsung-Dao way of life, which is kind of at odds with modern progressive thinking.
