As the Emperors light grows dimmer, the flames of heresy burn all the brighter to replace it.
The desolate world of Salatar has become a base for the Word Bearers, the very architects of treason. Here they have worked their dark arts, creating a daemon world where no sane human would willingly tread.
Twisting reality itself, on the planets surface impossible factory complexes churn out a constant flow of war machines, while huge ship yards in its upper atmosphere build the fleets that will carry the Word Bearers unholy message across the Galaxy.
A daemon world is virtually immune to conventional attack, giving the Word Bearers an unassailable fortress and a direct link to their dark patrons.
However, every fortress has a weakness.
Inquisitor Payne reveals nothing of her sources, or the unspeakable prices that have been paid for such knowledge, but she has brought before the military leaders of the Dalgross sector a plan of attack.
As with all the spawn of the Warp, the Daemon world is unstable in real space, and remains stable by arcane rituals of tremendous power. These are centre on the dread space hulk known to Imperial authorities as “The City of the Damned.”
Should this ancient monolith to degeneracy be destroyed, the Daemon world would be cast into the warp, obliterating it in the process.
Through the sacrifice of hundreds of precious soul bound psykers, Inquisitor Payne has managed to briefly calm the warp storms around Salatar, creating a window through which a war fleet can travel and strike at the City of the Damned.
The task is formidable. The attackers will have only minimal time to prepare for their assault and thought they will have the advantage of surprise, the Word Bearers are no fools. With the experience of ten thousand years of constant warfare, they have constructed a formidable defensive network, both material and arcane, leaving nothing to chance.
In addition to their own dread forces, they have gathered to their banner heretics, pirates, mercenaries and outcastes from across the sector.
Some, like the depraved cannibals of the Orange Order may share the Word Bearers perverse faith, while others have been drawn by promises of wealth, power or slaughter.
In the face of such a task, no less than the Adeptus Astartes, the Emperors elite Space Marines, are called into action.
Cannoness Helea, under pressure from Inquisitor Payne to use her new found wealth and influence for something other than personal aggrandisement, has declared this mission a holy crusade.
Numerous chapters have contributed warships to the effort, with the largest contributions coming from the Panther Claws and Emperors Teeth, two chapters known to have close ties to Inquisitor Payne.
The combined might of the Chapters will now be flung into the fires of battle against insurmountable odds, each warrior utterly dedicated to victory at all costs and unshakeable in the belief that a life given in the service of the Emperor is never spent in vain.
The ice asteroids were set up to represent the outter rungs around the planet, with the space marines appearing just in front of them as the came in from the warp.
The ship yard terrain is from a site called raven star minatures who do some cool resin sci fi stuff.
The space marines tearing into the word bearers outter defences.
The blue battle barge is the "Spiritual League", an Ultramarine flag ship to lead the crusading forces.
A good view of the terrain and ships on the other side of the battlefield, where the space marine strike cruisers were taking some damage from long range fire.
The formidable defensive network, including large numbers of fleeing transports, trying to escape the space marines righteous wrath! At the back we can see the City o the Damned, the space marines primary target.
A better view on the spiritual league, and some of the purple panther claws strike cruisers, as well as a strike cruiser from the sons of medusa.
A chaos grand Cruiser of the orange order attempts to to defend the caos transports that are hopingot escape with essential troops and supplies for the chaos war effort.
The might of the Emperors Teeth Chapter on full display! Their proud vessels hide terrible secrets and genetic heresy.
REINFORCEMENTS!
Having shattered the outter chaos defences, the space marines' second wave arrives, bringing in a second massive attack force.
The City of the Damned is left dangerously exposed, as is the Chaos commander in his commander centre(the yellow nad black space station). Only now does he realise that the Imperials know of the daemon worlds weakness.
The space marines brought a total of 6 battle barges, 18 strike cruisers and 36 escort vessels to this battle! Truly a force of epic proportions.
The Imperial Navy sent a small force of 3 Imperial Cruisers to support the space marines. Against the vast numbers of chaos vessels, they needed all the help they could get!
The Word Bearers are masters of daemonolgy and used this power to summon twisted daemon vessels to the battlefield. These two destroyed a damaged Emperor's Teeth Strike Cruiser. A worthy prize but it left hem both badly out of position.
The Word bearers dark sorcery opened a warp rift, which began spewing masses of daemon ships onto the battlefield. COmbined with the planet's mortal defenders, it looked like the space marines might be over whelmed.
Massive chaos reinforcements!
A daemon posessed battle barge (the bronze coloured battle barge in the top right corner) over shot with its engines and due to the fire it was taking was unable ot turn quickly enough.
It hurtled into the space docks, obliterating itself.
battle Barges are bad ass. Fact.
In the end the space marines destroyed the command centre and the City of the damned and then fought a furious battle with the vengeful chaos forces, who were launching suicidal attacks, ignoring their own losses, to try to tkae down as many attackers as possible.
A heroic strike cruiser from the Emperor's Teeth set its engines to full power, crashes right through some of the spce docks to fly directly into the warp rift. Ocne inside they activated their warp engines, obliterating the strike cruisers but collapsing the rift, causing the daemon ships to lose their connection to the material universe and fade away, returning to the warp.
A force of Grey Knight Space marines arrived to reinforce the attackers, causing the chaos vessels to lose all fleet organisation and scatter before the might of the Space Marines.
Within a few days, the planet collapsed in on itself. Billions of screaming cultists cried out for aid, but their cruel gods were indifferent to their pleas. The Dark God's reward only victory, for the defeated they offer no comfort.
The only disappointment in the Imperial Victory was that the heretic Commandant Commander Vile and his flag ship were sighted taking command of the Chaos forces after the word bearer leadership was destroyed.
The majority of suriviving chaos vessels fled with him. This fiend will no doubt return to trouble the Imperium in the future.
While all the space marines were celebrated for their great victory, the Emperor's Teeth were lorded as the having gained the most glory.
Lord Gilgamesh, leader of the panther claws, made excuses to avoid attending the celebration. Giving honours to the Emperor's Teeth, a chapter he considers below his own in status, was more than he could stand!
The great success has restored confidence in the Emperor's Teeth and justified the resources spent on rebuilding them after they were almost destroying by the Tyranids.
It also allowed their horrific heresies to remain hidden...
