The Demiurg are a mysterious, nomadic race of aliens who mine precious resources from asteroids. They are known to ally with the Tau Empire, but will work for others if paid for their assistance. Though we've never seen a picture of them, the demiurg are implied to be some kidn of space dwarves (mining and industry, hating orks etc.) This picture shows off the fleet, along with their mining station in the background. (That isn't an offical model, its from Spartan games.) I also got them their own fighters and bombers which aren't official models (they never made models for that!) Demiurg ships are largely automated, and mount a powerful mining laser on the front. It's short ranged but devastatingly powerful. Games workshop only made 2 demiurg ship models (the cruiser and battleship) so these escorts are 3D printed from Shapeways in order to make them a fully functional fleet. I really like the strange shape of these ships. They feel a bit less fantastical than some of the others and a bit more 'hard sci fi' in style. Their profiles from the side front and above are really different. These guys are a minor faction in the 40K lore, but I really like them and I plan to involve them in the next big game I organise. Since they are self greedy and mercenary, its not hard to come up with reasons for them to get involved...

A far cry from Imperial ships, those look like cathedrals.
The laser being short range is a balancing thing I take it?

Yeah you can't have one side be good at everything. These guys are relatively slow but heavily armed and armoured.
The mining laser is also quite flavourful of what the Demiurg are all about. Gotta get those precious resources!
The fighting in BFG generally ends up quite close range as the battle goes on, so its likely the demiurg will get a chance to use the mining laser. They have lots of other weapons (like their drone controlled fighters and bombers.)
There is kind of an ugliness to the demiurg vessels that I really like.

What is this? I was told dwarves are heresy in WH40K.

They actually officially added them back in. They are called Squats and they weren't in the game since decades ago. But they just added them back into Nercomunda, the skirmish game about gangs fighting. He even has the old style helmet and padded armour squats had back in the day. Though if squats still exist...I am REALLY wondering what the hell a demiurg looks like!

If I were to guess, I'd say that they added Squats to their silly side game by fan demand, but they're still keeping them at distance from their super serious grimdark future.
I'm going to also guess that Demiurg will be cybernetic beings or stone golems or something like that.
My hypothesis is that dwarves had to be rid of because with everyone wearing ridiculously blocky armour, it would be impossible to tell a Squat from a Space Wolf.

According to the designers explaining what happened, they felt super uninspired by squats. They made them really silly (even the name) and then when they came ot redo them realised they were kinda ridiculous (dwarf bikers in space) so kept pushing them back. They rather foolishly didn't declare them officially removed right away, so people kept expecting them. They did declare them gone, but I guess now they are back.
demiurg were done as a reimagining on them in the mean time, that kinda got left behind BFG was dropped.
Stone skinned cyborg types sounds pretty cool, I am down with that.

Demiurge are probably AI made by the squats.
Fun fact though, squats are now humans, just like rattling snipers and Ogyrns. Last time I checked anyway. So they're still not Dwarfs.

Squats were always abhumans. Back in the day they were a big part of the lore and were common place in the Imperium. The demiurg are actual aliens. They are both different takes on the idea of dwarves in space but the two are entirely unrelated.
It's kinda cool to see the same fantasy concept reimagined in different ways.
Demiurg are demonstrably better than Squats and I can prove this scientifically.
Squats don't have any space ships. Case closed.
