Right...let's build us a space ship!
Ork ships are crazy junky rusty buckets, so they seem like the best place to start.
For our inspiration, lets pick something from the rather fun Battlefleet Gothic computer game-
Waaargh! Well 'ard!
Obviously we won't get a perfect recreation, but it gives us something to aim for.
The core of our new dooms day machine is a big block of wood, with a small peice of wood stuck on top.
Obviously all right thinking Orks know that wood is a crappy thing to build stuff out of, we will hide this shameful material with panels made of card.
Okay we'll glue on some more bits and see what we've got so far...
Hmm looks like a big load of crap...but stay with me! This will work! I swear!
Lots of pieces were recast from other models, as well as some custom made turrets and lots of raiding my bits boxes.
Okay time to get some paint on this horrible mess and cover up my sins!
Already you can see its starting to come together a bit once everything is the same colour!
Now he's a big brass coloured bastard. Time to brush over him with some nice metallic paint...
Now we can see it all coming together. It had an under coat of a dark brash and then dry brush ontop with some dark silver.
Its getting there...but still a bit bland. Time for some additional orky improvements....
WAAAARGH!
Now its ready to rumble!
Let me give you a break down of what went into this bad boy.
The front section is a front mask from an Ork Deth Dredd kit, with the under bite made from a lego piece.
The big claw on his head came about from me thinking about angler fish. The actual piece is from an old Ork war Machine from a game called Epic that had very small models of tanks and things.
Next to Ork escorts and kroozers you can get an idea of what a monstrousity this thing is.
Something I liked in the computer game was that there was a bit of a divide between the engine section and the body, so I worked that into it.
the back section is bits of straw, left of Deth dredd bits and panels, all glued around the lid of some super glue. I drilled a hole in the ships wooden core to fix it into so it stays in place.
The side sections are recast from another Epic scale war machine, and the Ork Idol on top is an plastic Ork Epic war machine with the legs cut off just stuck right on.
In addition to card panels there are some brass ones with orky symbols mixed in.
There can never be enough Dakka, but I came as close as possible by adding loads and loads of guns all over the thing. As well as massive front cannons it has loads of smaller weapons that I can imagine blazing wildly as it hurtles forward.
The good thing is with Orks, their creations are not supposed to be uniform or symmetrical, so I didn't have to make everything match up. In fact I was deliberately making it so the two sides are only roughly the same.
Ork technology works in part because Orks sub-conciously cause a psychic effect that warps reality around them. So the ship works in part because they Orks believe it will.
I decided the ship would have to be named after an incontinent Ork captain who is known to urinate all over his Gretchin slaves in moments of excitement...the one Ork who always says "I believe I can fly."
Waaaargh Kelly!
(Also a friend of mine hates that song, so I called it that to piss him off. Heheh.)
