I must admit I didn't lay out all the security procedures for the Celestial Palace.
The specific room the sword is in is not the most secure part of the palace, but the palace in general is normally the most secure place in the Omnispheres.
The initial moving of the royal family might well have bene under the context of just moving them as a standard precaution, because the idea that a giant fleet of ships and robots had suddenly appeared at the same time that all their defences turned off would not have occurred to the guards. They were also trying to move the members of the Celestial Parliament, but we were mainly focused on the Royal Family.
Princess Sapphire was the only person to escape, as the Dreadbots had blocked the way to the escape pods (its almost like someone gave them all the plans to the palace and all the Stellar Guards defensive plans) and she could only escape because of her special tiara and the disruption caused by Dreadlord trying to take the Ultrasword without making sure it was safe first.

A security protocol that prevents the sword from being accessed on short notice also explains why they couldn't take it with them to the safer place. Though does that mean it was just the Sword's security protocols that zapped our villain or does the sword just not like evil people? If the royals had tried to take the sword to their saferoom or whatever, would they also have been zapped?

The sword was meant to be zapping him because he was evil. I think yanking the sword out would have caused the machines around to explode or spark, but the sword itself wouldn't zap you if you aren't evil. It would be dangerous to mess with.

A few more images of characters. The Dark Captain is one of Dreadlord minions. He's not as high ranking as some of the others but acts as an enforcer when needed. Lord Zoldron, (as we should all remember) is Dreadlord prior to being wounded by the Ultra Sword's power. I also wanted to give a sense of the size of the Magitechs, Shadowtech and the look of them when they are flying through the air.

I really do like Shadowtech's aesthetic.

I like the idea that he's the opposite to the magitechs. They are fuzzy, cute and want to help. He is spikey, frightening and entirely malicious.

Hey, it's entirely possible for spiky, frightening, purely malicious things to be cute!

Plushy magitech would be great, but there must never be a plushy Shadowtech. You could have toy shadowtech or model shadowtech, but never plushy.

Yeah, I suppose a metallic exoskeleton doesn't translate well into a plush toy
