There are magics in Harkovast that even the wizards of Eldex cannot explain or understand....lets talk about one of these....
The Cansaibe, Al-Saigal, Darsai, and Galdrasai races all share a feline appearance and all worship the war god Thane. Their religions diverge widely on the nature of Thane or the method of worship that he requires, but a few things remain constant.
One of these is the veneration of the Warrior King.
The Galdrasai consider him to be the earthly son of their god, a belief their missionaries passed on to the Darsai. The Al-Saigal say his is a chosen mortal, blessed by Thane. The Cansaibe believe he is literally Thane taking mortal form.
Which, if any of these explanations is true is a matter of opinion.
The Warrior King can be born into any of these four nations, and when one Warrior King is slain it is said that Thane will send his blessing to another of the nations where a baby will be born as the new warrior king. This is seen as a great portent of Thane's favour on the nation that receives him.
In appearance, each Warrior King is physically one of the race into which they were born, but as the child grows they exhibit many remarkable abilities. They do not have any talent for the magic of their race, but have remarkable physical skill and speed. In battle, a Warrior King has few equals, being more than capable of defeating dozens of normal opponents at once. The Warrior King is blessed with long life, remaining in prime physical health for many decades.
Throughout history, Warrior King's have arisen and left their mark on history. Some have even ruled nations and founded mighty dynasties. It is rumoured that Al-Dulma, prophet of Thane and first Sultan of the Al-Saigal might have been a Warrior King in ages past.
Since the power of the Warrior King is not passed from father to son, dynasties or great houses founded by a Warrior King do not inherit any of his abilities and may prosper or fail like any other.
The Warrior King is seen as a holy figure by all Thane-worshipping nations. He holds no official rank, but he can expect to to receive great respect and reverence.
The current Warrior King is known as Xan (formerly Al-Xan) and is one of the Al-Saigal. He is believed to be at least eighty years old, though since little is known about his youth this is at best a rough guess.
For a long time he lived in seclusion, having seemingly turned his back on the world. In the First Nameless war he travelled to Vellastrom at the behest of Eldex. His arrival was seen as a good portent of the hard pressed Darsai armies. He was the first person to kill one of the Fourteen Evils, defeating The Banshee in battle and delivering her head to the Darsai King's court. He also assisted in the attacks on the furnace ships of the Nameless Fleet and the destruction of another of the Evils, The Avatar.
When the war was won he returned to his self imposed exile in the borderlands of Jaydia.
As the power of The West rises once more, the faithful of Thane offer prayer that the Warrior King will return to deliver his people from The Enemy.
But there are whispers...questions that remain unanswered. The Warrior King's of the past have always been surrounded in legend and mystery and with time it becomes hard to separate the truth from legend in the many contradictory tales. Certainly the imams of the Al-Saigal are careful to guard information about the Warrior Kings, Xan in particular, and are quick to condemn as heresy anyone asking too many questions about him...particularly why The Warrior King no longer uses the honourific prefix the Al-Saigal normally use....
