The books are the worst. The only saving grace is they have high production values, they are nice and shiny with pretty pictures.
But, and this is where its bad - Games Workshop games have really awful rules. They are built off an archaic system made in the 80's and when compared to a lot of games today are an embarrassment.
Then it gets worse - Not only are there a lot of much better games out there - They generally give away the rules for free.
Canuovea, if you are wanting to get into Warhammer/Wargames I'd offer different advice depending on why you want to get into it. Though the thing that really trumps everything else is what the people you know are playing.
The starter box sets are actually a decent price, you get a ton of models (Though i think they might be 2 piece clip-together models rather than having seperate arms and heads etc.) Unfortunately, Warhammer and 40k have moved to be mass battle. This means squads can die or get decimated in a single round of shooting quite easily, meaning you need big armies to really get the most out of the game. Also, you will get tired of the small armies very quickly because of the lack of tactics.
If you are into modelling and not so much playing then these box sets are okay, but then i'd probably say buy some cheap stuff of Ebay - you can easily find some good deals if you are looking for interesting models rather than cohesive armies/units.
I saw that you are into board games, if you want to play games, but not buy millions of models I would either suggest Descent or Imperial Assault from Fantasy Flight. Games-Workshop also made a couple of skirmish games: Blood Bowl, Necromunda and Mordheim. The rules for these are available online for free as PDFs and only require about 20 models per person.
