I'm trying to get hold of some recaste resin copies of some of the craft world eldar ships. They look something like this- I have some of the escorts and the multi sailed flag ship one, but not the cruisers. Once I get those, I will pretty much have ever official model for BFG I want (though are a few shit ones I am not really interested in getting.) There are still plenty of alternatives people have made out there though, so my addiction to ships will not be cured so easily!

Oh, but didn't they say that GW is starting this all up again? If so, sure, you might have those ships. But not the new fancier ones they'll no doubt release.

Pffft the new ones probably wont be as good. GW don't have the sense of aesthetics they used to...or more accurately they fired everyone who did. A while ago someone (I think it was you, Canu) asked if there was anythng I didn't have. Once I get these I can answer the question (with regard to the original model range) with "nothing I want".

The quality of GW models has gone up. More detail, etc, than even when I was collecting Eldar so long ago. That being said, I agree that the designs have not necessarily improved. In fact, sometimes more "stuff" is bad.

Oh yeah the casting and level of detail has improved. That is undoubtedly the case. Technology has advanced greatly so models now can be far more complex.
What is lacking is the sense of design and style GW used to have. Just adding more and more detail and tat and to every bit of blank space on a model doesn't make it better. A lot of the modern models from GW end up beng a cluttered mess without any clearly shape or style. Not all of them are bad, but many of them are far less classic then they were back in the day.
One thing that got me so excited about dropfleet commander is that the designs were ambitious and complicated (back when BFG was made, you couldn't make models that complicated or elaborate) but they still all have a cool, clear design to them.
A good rule of thumb for if a model is well designed or not...can you doddle a picture of it? If its too complicated or unclear to be easily doodled, its probably not a good design for a model.

I have to admit to liking some new GW models. The Dark Eldar ones are especially sleek. But the Space Marines have just gotten worse and worse.

Like this? That seems a but much to me, I can't imagine trying to fight in that, even if it is powered armour.

No no, that is a nearly dead guy on life support in a very big, very clunky looking, ostentatious machine. More like this centurion. Or this Babycarrier:

Christ...if you don't seem them for a while then you come back and realise just how fucking stupid this shit gets.
Compare those to the eldar ships I posted at the start. Look how simple and clear the designs are by comparisson!
There is still good stuff from GW, but the decline in the designs is very noticiable. Not writing off everything as bad...but its certainly getting worse.

Even compare the same kind to the older ones. Compare this to the Dreadnought Renard posted.

You two can have a few points for amusing me. There are still plenty of other people out there making great designs. Check these awesome tyranid ships out. linkThese are made a a French guy I know who makes them all by hand. He is SUPER talented! the detail on these is crazy and they are actually surprisingly affordable. I'm a big fan of his work. He's doing a battle ship size one at the minute, which should be bad ass.

That baby carrier thing looks horrible, even without all of the decorations on every square inch of the armour.
What's it supposed to be exactly? A bigger powered armour suit that someone can wear over their big powered armour suit?

Yes, space marines inside bigger space marines is the new thing. That centurion one is a bigger suit of armour worn over the normal armour. The baby carrier is an armoured dude strapped to the front of a big robot armoured dude.
Someone got paid to make this trash.
