One of the things about delving so deeply into the nuance of a world is you come across issues that are difficult to research. Here's one issue I'm having. Firewood. These are people who have lived in a given area for generations and needed firewood the whole time. They've also cleared large arias of land for agriculture. I reasoned that there are likely still pockets of trees nearby since once a tree reaches a certain size cutting it down with this: is a hell of an undertaking. So eventually the trees that are around the villages are just stands of massive trees that are largely useless to them. If you could cut it down how do you cut it into manageable size logs (no horses or oxen to drag them) and then split those small enough for use? They could cut or break off lower branches for firewood, but that would encourage the trees to grow taller. Probably the desired size for firewood would be about as large around as your arm or smaller. So now you have to go a long way to find trees like this, and you have to get it back to the village. This would become a full time job. And by that time wood might be of more value as a building material then as fuel.
So I started thinking about what they would have as a possible substitute. I had decided on barley as their most likely crop, so that meant there would be a lot of barley straw available to them after each harvest. Is straw a viable option as a source of fuel? It burns up kinda fast. Maybe if it was knotted together to form a tight bundle it would be a good option.
But I can't find any information to confirm or debunk that.

Y'know, considering my presumptuous name, I don't think I've ever posted any of my stories here.

Hah, it would be neat to read them yes, but I also know sometimes its pretty stressful to put something out there like that.

People criticize my shit
all
the
time.
I kinda learned to take it.
Plus it's pretty much impossible to judge your own work without bias.

You know what's worse than getting criticism?
Getting no criticism.

One of those catch22 situations.

As well you should. I mean, who hasn't built an underground pool with stone age tools when there's a perfectly good river to swim in nearby?

And the water would become stagnant
But still. It is fascinating. Underground and hidden. I was thinking if your folks in Moon Eater would build sort of similar places for bodies to rest until souls could be properly guided.

That would make some sense since the place where they keep their dead has to be away from the light, and having it underground would keep it cooler so the bodies would decay slower.
Though it couldn't have water in it.
