I decided to make some the nut on my next instrument build out of bone, since I had a shoulder blade from a deer that was shot last year. I cooked the bone, sawed off what I needed from it and spent the last few weeks soaking that piece in a solution to remove all the fat residue from the grain. Today I finally got a chance to start working with it. I figured it should be easy to work bone.
Bone is fucking HARD! I mean, way harder than any wood or plastic. It's tougher to file than a lot of metals. A hardened steel rasp that I have that simply eats any wood I put it to is having trouble with it.
Now I'm very interested in making a knife out of bone.

"I use antlers in all of my dehhhcorating!"
Turns out bone is pretty useful.

Finished the banjo rebuild for my friend today. All it needs now are some strings. It doesn't look like a refurbished banjo, but it should function just fine. I didn't want to refinish it or anything because I wanted it to still look the same as he remembered it when his dad played it. It cost me very little to do fix it up. I only had to put about 10 bucks into it (time value I put quite a bit into it). I couldn't find the exact same tuning peg to replace the broken one, but I managed to pick up a similar used one that I modified to function with this banjo. I had to remove a fair amount of wood to dig out the broken screw, but I was able to repair that damage with some filler and glue. It should be just fine, and the damage can't be seen unless you pull the banjo apart and know where to look for it. I also replaced the broken plastic nut with a bone one I made.
Now I'm thinking if I can find a busted up banjo for cheap enough I might pick one up and rebuild it for myself.

So how many instruments have you built or repaired now?

So how many instruments have you built or repaired now? Eight I think. Might get to fix an electric mandolin too soon.

My CPU is fried so my ability to do anything is severely hampered atm.

I think the problem this contest has had is that people have kind of read it as an art contest, where as it's meant to be more of a cool idea contest.
I think it made it seem intimidating for people to enter.

I'm just having issues with not having enough time. Plus, when I found some time the other night I was so tired that I finished writing up two great ideas for herbivores, only to realize I'd perfectly described a deer and a horse

Welp, got myself a new cpu.
Bought a refurbished for 120 bucks.
It's kinda slow, but the nice thing is that a lot of my old cpu parts will plug right into this one. So once I crack it open I can swap in a pile of RAM, and if I upgrade the power supply I can jam in the big graphics card I have. For the moment I'm just running it stock to see how it holds up.

I'd be lost when it comes to that stuff, glad to hear you've got something you can use though.

Stuff like RAM is super easy to install, about as easy as sticking in a Nintendo cartridge. You just have to make sure you put in cards that your processor will recognize. This computer has 4 slots for RAM but it only came with one card, swapping in 3 more is a piece of cake. (The bonus is that it was supposed to come with two small 2 gig cards, but when I peaked inside I was delighted to find that it had one 4 gig card instead. I have three more 4 gig cards so I'll have a total of 16)
The big downer is the processor is quite small compared to my old one and will limit gaming options.

That's not something you can swap out, is it?

Swapping a processor is doable but not easy since they're glued in to maximize heat sink function.
But so far this processor is holding out okay. I think it's technically a single core that's been overclocked to function as a duel core. It actually has more processing power than my old cpu, the problem is that it can't multitask nearly as well as my old quad core. So it can run a single task quite well, but has to prioritize multiple tasks and slows down considerably. Even a single core that's been tricked into thinking it's a duel core is still a single at heart.
It will run a game like World of Tanks pretty easily, which I was surprised by, but when downloading the game (which is huge) it was resistant to doing anything other than downloading. Though dropping in more RAM will probably help with that.
I've also found that the on board graphics card is actually pretty good. It won't run anything on high settings, but so far it's doing fine on medium. I'm not sure if there's a major benefit to upgrading it right now.
So I guess if I limit running anything in the background it should be fine for the moment.
