We all know Hark has his card project and his little space ships, but what are the rest of us working on? A few days ago I decided to go fishing due to the unseasonably warm weather. As I sat on the shore with my lines in the water every once in a while someone would motor by on their boat. They'd wave to me and I'd wave back, all the time thinking "you just rubbing it in, asshole?". It occurred to me that there's no reason for me not to have one aside from the fact that I'm too cheap to buy one. For years I contemplated building a boat. This winter I think I'm finally gonna give it a go. All it really requires is some plywood and a few power tools, right? I'm smarter than the average idiot, I should be able to handle that. Of course my boat will have to meet certain parameters. Since I don't have a truck and I'm not keen on trying to pull a trailer with my little Saturn, it needs to be light enough to car top (>100 lbs). It also needs to be able to handle a fair amount of weight (me). I'd like it to paddle like a kayak but be more fishable than a typical kayak. Something like a cross between a kayak and a john boat. I'd also like the option of putting a small motor on it when I'm feeling lazy. Something like this might fit the bill: It's a simple design that should be relatively easy to build. It's a little smaller than I want though, only 11 feet. I'm thinking I'll modify the design a bit, keeping the same width but stretching it to around 14 feet to give it more room for stuff.

Should probably put fibre glass on the hull too. I've got a fuck-off huge roll of structural fibre glass that they were throwing away at work, my buddy and I had plans to use it repairing his motorboat.

I mentioned this is the weapons thread, but I think I'm going to start working on an AR15 build. Our economy isn't doing so well right now, and since most AR15 rifles are coming from the US the prices have gone up considerably. I think I can get most of the parts I need here, and only a few things from the US, but this is really the first time in a while that building a rifle has been a cheaper option.

I didn't want to go overboard (heh) on materials for the boat build. Plus I'm not sure how much I'll like the design. Is it too tipsy? Have bad manners? I'd hate to put all the effort into fiberglass and epoxy on a turd. I figured I'd just put a heavy coat of paint on it to start and if the boat turns out to be a winner I could fiberglass it later or build a second one that I put more time and money into.
I read that you were starting the AR. Have you picked out the caliber yet?

That makes sense. Worst comes to worst you could caulk the seams.
I'm going to see about finding a .223 Wylde barrel, failing that I'll go with 5.56mm.

I might make a shield for one of my cousin's kids. She's into vikings.
I need to finish painting these Elves and move onto the fucking rats. Goddamn rats.

This is a better thread for it. Here's how far I've gotten. All the cutting, sanding, and drilling is done. The neck, head, and body is all fitted and glued. Next step is to glue the fret board on and fit the frets, which will probably be time consuming. After that I can attach the keys and string it.

That's coming along quickly. God knows when I say I'm going to do something, it usually takes me a while to get around to actually doing it.

I started this thread talking about building a boat that I never built. So there's that.
Though that's mostly due to lack of space as opposed to lack of motivation.
I'm happy with how the guitar build it progressing. I was hoping to have it completed today but there's a huge tropical storm bearing down on us. Looks like I won't be able to work outside. I can do most of what's left inside, but I wanted to clear coat it. I'll have to wait for a sunny day for that.

I managed to (mostly) finish painting the Elves and Rats. my next challenge is to actually be able to play with the damn things.
Never finished that shield though.

Pics or it didn't happen. Plus I wanna see yer elves and rats. Speaking of pics: It's finished. Or close enough for government work. I didn't clear coat it, but I wanted to put it together and see if it worked. I fretted it based on a 24 fret setup but skipped every odd fret, so it's missing all the half octaves. This may have been a mistake, but it's one that can be fixed. The fret board is actually what was lining the cigar box. Thin strips of cedar so it seals better and protects the cigars. I had to piece them together and some of the glue is still visible on the fret. I couldn't sand it off because it was getting too thin as it was. I like the contrast with the oak though. I made a lot of mistakes on it, most notably I messed up the tuning key placement. I wanted 2 on top and one on the bottom but I fucked up and did my measurements backwards. Didn't notice the mistake until after I already drilled a hole. I also had to put more of that cedar lining on the sides of the head to cover up an "oops" when I was cutting. I also had to put opposite side keys on the bottom cuz they wind in different directions. That way they both turn the same way for tuning. The .30 Carbine bullet was the best match I could find for the nut. Looks kinda neat. Yeah, it's a live shell. The bridge is a cheap scope rail that I cut in half. It's a tad too tall yet. I'm gonna take it off and sand the bottom until it's the right height. I'm not able to tune it right. I just don't have an ear for it. I'll have to pick up an electronic tuner It has a mellow sound to it. Not terribly loud but not as quiet as I was worried it might be. I'll probably drill more sound holes.

That would require me to take pictures though...
But that looks nicely done!

That does look pretty good, I like that the build includes a scope rail and a live rifle cartridge.

For my first attempt I'm pretty happy with it. I probably wouldn't use steel nails for frets in the future, clipping them to size was a pain and they're still not quite right. If you're gonna fret it than fret wire is probably worth the expense. I'm also not entirely sure I got the correct strings for it.

Not surprisingly the internet lied to me. Turns out learning a 3 string is not as easy as I was led to believe.
