Thats really cool being able to build stuff. I can barely hold a pencil the right way around!

I'd need to use a welding shield then, the burning goggles probably aren't dark enough.
You're a far, far better artist than me, I can only draw stuff if it's straight lines and I've got a combination square handy.

Don't sell yourself short, Hark. You never know what you can do until you try it. Plus Youtube is always there to show you how. My next build will probably be electric. When we were kids we used to view the eclipse with a pinhole viewer cuz we didn't have all this fancy dancy glasses and stuff. Though the glasses are pretty cheap, I might just splurge on one.

I remember seeing stuff like that mentioned, but I don't recall us ever being in a position to view even a partial eclipse.
Probably should conduct a sacrifice so the moon won't just keep the sun, to be on the safe side.

Hopefully, we're nearly level with Portland, Maine.

I remember the 1991 eclipse. That was way off from where we were but we could still see the moon pass in front of the sun and it did make the sunlight appear kinda odd for a few minutes. The light bends a bit on the edge of the moon and throws weird shadows. I'm not actually going to be in the direct shadow of this one, I'll have to travel about 20 miles south for the full effect. Since these don't happen very often it's prolly worth the trip.

I'd say, I'll have a look at the sun on that day, I don't think I'll be working on the 31st.

You won't see anything on the 31st, it's on the 21st.

So if I went out and stood around staring at the sun with a welding shield on at the end of the month I'd just look like an idiot?

Either that or you'd look really eager for the next one.
in 2024.
Which coincidentally is supposed to pass directly over Maine, which will mean the state will have been under the shadow of an eclipse on 3 different occasions in the span of 100 years.

That'll be a lot more visible here, hopefully the weather in 7 years holds out.

So I'm sitting here with the notion that I'd try and slap together a kids book, y'know, something with lots of pictures and little writing that will endear itself to young audiences, cept I can't come up with anything even remotely original. I thought I'd just start with a title and move on from there. My first idea was "The Monster Under My Bed". A quick Google finds that not only is there at least one book with an identical title. There are a number with similar titles. Don't suppose "The Monster in My Closet" would happen to be available? Nope, too much to hope for. Okay, no biggie. Next try was "The Happy Fish". Alright, not getting discouraged yet... How about "The Sad Puppy"? Jesus. Um... "My Pet Dinosaur"? Are you fucking kidding me? That was a movie? And it came out this year? No way I can do that without looking like a hack. Holy shit this sucks. Anybody got any ideas I can steal?

Some kid learns that spiders aren't really that bad, they're helpful, and really its just an unfair biological reaction ingrained in us by ages of genetics that makes us fear them so?

Well, the first title that hit my head was "The Friendly Spider". And of course... However, "My Pet Spider" had no book hits. So there's a possibility.
