Polls were wrong in recent years in numerous parts of the world. I suspect there's something wrong with the polls.

Probably, yes. But it wasn't just polls, it was historical precedent.
In either case, if you take democracy seriously (and if you think there was massive amounts of voter fraud) then you should want recounts in situations like this.

The reason for the recount is not because they think the numbers are wrong, it is because if the recounts are still going on when the Electoral College assembles said states won't be able to send delegates. That means Trump will be pushed from over 300 down to about 260, meaning things will be forced to go to congress (while Congress is largely Republican, it will be oh so easy to bribe a party already not exactly big fans of Trump to turn on him and vote in the biggest mound of pure concentrated corruption to ever exist in politics). There is a reason George Soros is funding this recount effort, it is because his puppet lost badly and this is an alternate way to undermine the system so he can have his wish.

Certainly some conspiracy mongering there. Is that why they have a limit on the date a recount can be called by? Ie, December 13th or so?

The deadline to file for a recount was November 25, and Jill Stein filed literally 90 minutes before that (Dec 13th is the deadline for the recounts to finish). In the event that the almost literally last minute recounts aren't completed by then, Trump loses those delegates. In that event, it goes to congress. If they sway Republicans to vote Hilary, they undermine the system and prove money and corruption wins every time. If they still put Trump in, his victory will be tainted and more unrest about him being in office will be stewed.
They couldn't have Hilary push for it, as it would come off poorly considering how badly she and everyone else bickered about Trump saying he wouldn't accept the election results. So they instead used a proxy in Jill Stein, someone who would gain literally nothing from a recount but serves as a nice decoy. It is no surprise to find out that George Soros funded the massive media push for Clinton, donated large amounts to Clinton's campaign, and funded Stein's recount efforts.

Well, that would be hilarious if it happened, but highly unlikely. Sounding a bit paranoid.
