Oh, I have a personal story with this one. I was doing the speaking part of an English exam, and I happened to be speaking about something about metals or mining (I don't remember any details) and like halfway through my fervent explanations (and after I spoke that word about half a dozen times) the examiner politely corrected my "lead" to "lead". I haven't actually heard that word spoken before, I've only heard "lead", and assumed that though it has a different meaning, it must be pronounced the same. I was floored. In what context would that be acceptable? I assume in the context of all the alt-right "news" the teacher was apparently eagerly consuming.

Wow.
That's a shock and a half.
