Macron won! Okay that's good, but lets not get too comfortable. My fear is that in response to this, the establishment will take it as proof that everything is fine and they should go back to business as usual. I really hope they heed the warnings about how great the danger is of popular back lash against the status quo. Unfortunately I fear they won't.

Well, looks pretty decisive.
Meanwhile in the USA... Sexual Assault counts as a pre-existing condition for Insurance purposes. So does a C-Section or Post Partum Depression. Well as you sow so shall you reap.

I just saw this in the Guardian's article about the election: Turnout was the lowest in more than 40 years. Almost one-third of voters chose neither Macron nor Le Pen, with 12 million abstaining and 4.2 million spoiling ballot papers. Seems like a similar situation to in America where a lot of people couldn't stomach either candidate.

Indeed, lots of French voters unhappy with both choices. Blank votes highest since the late 60s. Between neo facsism and neo liberalism people are tuning out. It's (mostly) working against the neo fascists favor but I wouldn't assume that can last forever. Trump's victory was because, in part, Hillary couldn't get Democrats motivated to go to the polls. Between two bad choices just enough people sat out, and that's all it takes really. Just enough
Nevertheless, glad Macron won. Now it is up to the French to begin the work of creating a new kind of politics, because otherwise it will only be a matter of time before another Le Pen type comes this close to power again.

Or Le Pen herself, the FN is probably figuring out what to do the next time around.

The question is, what sort of new politics would work here? Macron seems to ultimately be about as pro-establishment as you can get so he doesn't seem like he'll be too willing to do anything that's particularly revolutionary if there's a risk of it annoying Eurocrats.

Possibly. I know labour reform is something he wants to do so hopefully this won't end with tons of strikes and him having to flee to another country in the same way De Gaulle had to in '68. Regarding Le Pen, wouldn't France leaving the Euro potentially help by giving the French government more control over their economy?

I heard Le Pen had been talking about reforming things in the EU while staying in it and only leaving the Eurozone. Her lack of plan is inexcusable considering she's been a Eurosceptic for years (really, if she can't consider things like that, it's probably a good job that she lost; I know that Dutch candidate was the same regarding not having an actual plan). I agree with the point Macron made about the issues of where the profits of international trade goes.

Well the good news is it seems FN is in tatters too. The bad news is turnout was pretty abysmal for this.
