I think I've seen this somewhere, at the very least it's familiar.

I've heard of it but I've never seen it. I know it did poorly in the box office because it opened on the same weekend as The Lion King.

It's about 18 minutes in with this film before anything even happens! The most interesting things are that random goblins show up and a kid sings to make them run away (which made me laugh as I was thinking "Yeah, the musical numbers in this film ARE pretty bad!") and a fairy godmother who warns that something will happen later.
Was I the only one that thought the castle at the start was going to fall into the sea pretty soon from erosion? Also the two goblins in the cart seem to talk entirely in exposition. One of them explains who their leader is, and that having their feet stamped on is their weakness etc. This feels less like a fogotten gem and more like a film that would have died a death regardless of the Lion King. I'll watch some more tomorrow.

Oh, good. Somebody is actually watching it.
I was getting tired of doing these alone.

The evil goblin prince is voiced by comedy legend Rik Mayall. Outside the UK I am sure you won't have heard of him, but over here he was a big deal. Sadly he died earlier this year.

I'm often a bit busy to come on and watch these, but its fun when I do.

This movie seems really lifeless and I think I know why. Firstly, the plot is really meandering, so there isn't any real sense of urgency to anything that happens.
Secondly, there is no score! Other than when the boy sings there is no music in the background. Why aren't they playing exciting music when the girl is sliding on a rock? Why aren't they playing scary music when we see the goblins? Everything just feels flat.

During the end battle the movie started to feel kind of unfinished. There were some really messy animation errors, like a goblin breaking a door where the door just seems to vanish or the woman jumping on a goblins foot and disappearing in to the floor somehow. The King started to look like a character from one of those CDI zelda games from back in the day.
The whole thing just seemed really uninspired. There just wasn't anything to get interested in or worked up about.

I like the idea of finding a lost gem, a show that is really great but not that well known. If not great, then at least interesting, with original, curious ideas. In that spirit, lets watch what many consider the greatest unfinished animation ever made... The Cobbler and The Thief

Don't get ahead of us Hark. The Princess and the Goblin needs more lovin'. Or hatin' as it were.
Also that vid is blocked in my oppressive country.

First off, this looks like the same animators that did the Ketchup Vampires. Not a good place to start from.
Also, shouldn't this be called The Princess and the Goblins?
There is a half hearted attempt at a score early in the movie and during certain key parts, but mostly they don't try. The lack of a score means the voice actors have to say things when there really is no dialogue needed. A lot of "Ooh. Ah. What's this? Oh, no! Whoa!" because someone needs to try and fill up the flat parts. That "musical number" at the beginning of the movie isn't actually half bad for something that was slapped together. But it's hard to forgive the attempt to pay homage (IE rip off) the scary scene in Snow White where the princess is running through the forest. There's no build up to it so it comes off all wrong anyway.
Are goblins completely blind? This kid walks around their part of the mine several times without getting spotted. He pretty much had to fall on the goblin king's head to get noticed.

Holy shit the theief and the cobbler is awesome!
I was watching it just after posting it, and its really good.
Now I feel really bad they never finished it.
There are other cuts of it, I don't know if any of those are more complete though, might be worth looking into.
Wait a minute...fantasy Arabian style culture threatened bad guys with technological super weapons? Hmmm....I think someone might have beaten me to the punch here...

Alright, alright I'll look at the goblin one first. What was the deal with goblin cats and goblin animals? They seemed to follow the hating the songs rules, but I didn't get what the deal was. They called them goblins early on and we saw them before the actual goblins, that was really puzzling.

In fact fuck goblins, goblins are lame. They weren't scary, their motivations were poorly explained and boring and you can beat these losers by just singing at them. Why did the queen have more toes? Why did only she wear shoes?
