Back in the present…
The Air Marshal Explains that Skull Breaker, the leader of the special projects division (Known as the Project Marshal) is working on an absurd project that is attempting to see the future using the minds of captured adaptives. He describes this as mystical, pseudo scientific mumbo jumbo and a waste of resources. The resources he is squandering could be better used on important work such as new stealth planes, like he’s heard the Americans are building, or more investment in their new energy project that will end their oil dependency. The Project Marshal’s research just causes the test subjects to go insane, showing them visions of mass suicide.
Ronin asks how this connects to helping them.
The Air Marshal explains that Oracle has become the focus of the research. Skull Breaker seems to think she is very important to what he’s doing. If she was to be rescued it would disrupt Skull Breakers work and leave him humiliated and discredited. This would allow the Air Marshal to move to have funding put into more useful projects.
He leers at Paraodox, saying “I can see why you are so eager to help free your friend. I don’t get to enjoy the company of Adaptive females very often. It is a very…exotic experience.”
Hazard leans forward angrily and says “Let’s, like, keep is professional fido. Haven’t you got a nice rottweiler wife at home or something?”
The Air Marshall laughs “A kriegtier wife? There are no Kriegtier women. We are bred for combat. The nurturing ways of women, while delightful, are not part of our purpose.”
Hazard looks confused as she seems to mull this over. Then her expression changes to horror and she gives Steels a worried look. This does NOT sound like her kind of place!
The Air Marshal explains that a meeting of the Oberkommando is being held at a secret base known as the Eagles Perch.
He will get them access to it, disguised as servants.
He lays out of map of the base for them, with key locations marked.
He explains that once they have recovered their friend he will allow them back into his air ship, which they will then be allowed to take over and escape. When Flare questions why his is willing to lose a whole air ship he assures them that as nice as this vessel is, it is easily replaced and a small sacrifice to make to achieve his goals.
Whether they fail or are successful, the attack will be blamed on CLAW terrorists, and no blame will come back to him.
Trace questions why there would be Adaptives in a Nazi base, as she was under the impression they were untermensch to the Nazis.
The Air Marshal explains that outsiders have a simplistic view of the Forth Reich, and their society is actually far more complex. Making use of Adaptive labour is useful to their economy.
He adds that Death Dealer, his loyal agent, will continue to accompany them on the mission. (Death Dealer, who has remained standing throughout the meeting, clicks his heels together and stands more sharply to atteention when he is acknowledged.) He will be able to use his authority to get them where they need to be.
At the key moment, the Air Marshal will ensure the bases defences are down and the guards diverted, so they will face minimal opposition. He can’t guarantee the mission will be risk free, but based on CLAW’s fearsome reputation, he is sure it won’t be a problem for them.
Flare asks if it will be possible for them to rescue other adaptives being held at the Eagles Perch.
The Air Marshal says he has no objection to the idea, but Oracle is the focus of Skullbreakers research, so it is vital she is removed. As long as they get her, there is plenty of room on the air ship if they want to bring anyone else with them.
Many of our heroes feel concern at these plans, as they leave an obvious opportunity for the Air Marshal to betray them during their escape. However, they are too far into this situation to back out now, and will have to go along with the Air Marshal’s plans, at least for now.
Death Dealer escorts them to their rooms to rest during the journey.
The accommodation is luxurious, a remarkable contrast to the tough conditions of their journey to get here. They even have fully stocked mini bars!
Ronin sees Steel going into a cabin with Trace. However, meeting Steels gaze he gives him a thumbs up, showing his acceptance of how things played out.
Entering his own cabin he realises he is sharing it with the hulking but silent, Bulletproof, whose expressive face makes him even more intimidating.
Bulletproof pulls over a chair and a bed side table in front of him and points for Ronin to sit, which Ronin does.
Bulletproof then sits on the bed, opposite Ronin, takes a small, square object from him pocket and puts it on the table, sliding it across to Ronin.
Ronin takes it, realising it is a pack of cards.
Bulletproof taps the table with a claw.
Ronin takes the object, realising it is a pack of cards.
Bulletproof taps the table with a large clawed finger.
Ronin starts shuffling the cards. “So, poker, blackjack?”
Bulletproof nods for blackjack.
In their room Hazard says to Paradox “I don’t think Trace likes me”
Paradox, concerned says “Of course she does! Everyone likes you! She’s just stressed right now.”
Hazard says “Yeah…yeah absolutely! I’m, like, so much fun!”
In their room, Trace paces angrily in front of Steel, who is sat on the bed.
Trace says says she gets sick of Flare, that bitch is so smug, she thinks she’s always right.
Then she begins to get upset, sitting down beside Steel saying “Flare really is right, isn’t she? I really don’t know what I’m doing. How did they end up killing other adaptives? It all seemed to make sense before, but now I don’t know how we got here.”
Steel points out there Kriegtier aren’t adaptives.
Trace says she isn’t sure if that’s true anymore, or if it’s just something they tell themselves to justify what they are doing, like what Judgement told Hazard about fighting Chimera.
”The Air Marshal will betray us, and we won’t get back to England alive.
I’ve led everyone to their deaths.
I wish Judgement was here.”
Steel nods “Me too.”
After some time travelling, Death Dealer knocks on their doors to alert them they have reached their destination.
Looking through windows on the air ship they are shocked to see what the Eagles Perch actually is.
A huge flying fortress, with engines mounted below it, holding it hovering in the air.
It is dark and metallic, with bright red and white Nazi banners hanging down its sides.
Even through the wind and rain, it is an intimidating sight against the night sky.
There are landing strips on the top of the structure, which the airship moves towards.
((Our heroes near the Eagles Perch, an evil nazi fortress floating in the sky. Will they succeed? Will they escape? Find out next time.
One piece of bad news, I had art drawn of a load of new characters for this section, but the bad I had the art in has disappeared, so there wont be any new art posted for a while, sadly))
