Terminator Genisys
I thought I would do something a bit different for this review.
Rather than my usual hate filled snark fest, I am going to explain the plot to the original film The Terminator, and then explain the plot to Terminator Genisys in as simple a way as possible.
I am going to avoid making any comment and attempt to explain the basic premises of each movie in as simple and neutral a way as I can.
If I don't understand anything, I will be honest and state that I don't and tell you when I am guessing at something I am not certain of.
I am not dictating events in the order they are revealed in the film, due to time travel making things a bit none-linear, I am just providing an over view of all the events.
Let's begin.
The Terminator (1984)
In the future, humans and evil machines fight a devastating war.
The humans win, but before their defeat, the machines send an assassin robot called a Terminator (that appears human) back in time to 1984 to kill Sarah Connor, mother of John Connor, the leader of the human resistance. This will change history so the machines will win the war.
The humans send back a single warrior to stop The Terminator, Kyle Reese.
While on the run from the Terminator, Sarah Connor and the Kyle have sex, getting her pregnant.
Kyle is killed by the Terminator and then the Terminator is killed by Sarah.
Sarah is now pregnant with John Connor, creating a time loop where the machines inadvertently created the means of their own destruction.
Got that? Great!
Now lets go over what happens in Terminator Genisys
Terminator Genisys (2015)
In the future, humans and evil machines fight a devastating war.
The humans win, but before their defeat, the machines send an assassin robot called a Terminator (that appears human back in time to kill Sarah Connor, mother of John Connor, the leader of the human resistance. This will change history so the machines will win the war.
The humans send back a single warrior to stop The Terminator, Kyle Reese.
However, just before he goes back through time, Kyle sees John Connor being grabbed by one of his followers, who is secretly Sky Net (the military computer that controls all the machines) in human form. After Kyle has gone, John Connor is converted into a new kind of Terminator made of nano machines held together with magnets who now serves Sky Net.
He is sent back in time to ensure Sky Net is created and the war with the machines takes place in 2017.
This causes Kyle to see visions of two different time lines that he now has memories of--the one he actually experiences and a second one where the war with the machines happens much later.
In 1984 the Terminator that was sent back is ambushed by a second, older Terminator and Sarah Connor, who destroy it.
Meanwhile, Kyle Reese arrives in the past and is attacked by a more advanced Terminator made of liquid metal.
He is rescued by Sarah Connor and the Older Terminator (called Pops).
Pops was originally sent back in time to 1973 to protect a young Sarah from a liquid metal terminator. (This may be the one that's now trying to kill Kyle and it has been chasing them for 10 years or could be another one.)
It is unknown who sent Pops back in time.
Sarah, Pops and Kyle destroy the liquid metal terminator.
Sarah then reveals that Pops has built a time machine which will send them forward in time to 1997, the original date when the machine war starts, where they can stop Sky Net from being built.
Kyle, who now remembers a new timeline, says they should go to 2017, as that is the new date Sky Net is created.
Pops can't go with them, due to being damaged (I won't go into the details on how the time machine works right here.) He will just wait the twenty years and meet up with them in 2017.
In 2017 a new phone app is being created by Cyberdyne Systems, the company that made Sky Net, which Reese remembers from his alternate memories is secretly Sky Net and will start the war once it is activated.
Sarah and Kyle meet up with Pops, but are attacked by the now Terminator John Connor who wants them to join forces with him to help Sky Net but wants to kill them when they refuse.
Our heroes destroy John Connor and the Cyberdyne facility, aiming to prevent the machine war. Though unbeknownst to them Sky Net's core survives in a secret underground bunker.
During the battle Pops falls into a vat of the liquid metal that the liquid metal terminators are made from (that Cyber Dyne was creating) and is converted into a liquid metal terminator. This means he can time travel with Kyle and Sarah (again, I don't want to get into exactly how time travel works in this franchise.)
Sarah, Pops and Kyle use a time machine that Cyberdyne was creating to go back in time to see the young Kyle Reese and warn him that Genisys is Sky Net so that Kyle Reese will have this knowledge in the future due to the split time lines.
Any questions?
