And no, I don't mean tabletop Rocket propelled Grenades.
Basically making a thread to talk about a bunch of nerd shit played on tabletops, like Magic, D&D, Pathfinder, and even obscure games.
Or we can make separate threads to go into more detail with those. This can be the general thread to talk and complain about general tabletop rpg problems.
Like AC, or having a douchbag in your group and how to deal with them.

I can't remember if I mentioned this on the old forum but I've tried 5th Edition D&D recently. It seems pretty streamlined, which I'd say is a good thing, even though the PHB seems to lack magic options (admittedly it is better than how 4th Edition was due to having options which aren't basically "deal [DAMAGE TYPE] to [AREA/PERSON/LINE] and [SHIFT/STUN/CAUSE TO SING BADLY]"-type abilities.

I've been hoping to get into 5e, and now that my second semester has started up and my DM is back from her study abroad, the good old tabletop sessions can commence!

That's good. Any ideas for characters you want to try yet?

First off I wanna make a Dragonborn Barbarian following the totem path. After that I want to try a Half-orc Wizard/Eldrich knight focusing on necromancy spells.

Interesting (I've only converted existing 3.5 characters so far after coming up with new racial stats for them, specifically a Minotaur Barbarian and a Raccoonfolk Wizard).

Welp, I played a barbarian in 5e. I only played level 1 so far, but I have to say I enjoyed it.

That's good. What's happening in the game so far?

So far I had to escort a merchants daughter across a frozen tundra to her fiance that she doesn't want to marry, so not a too bad story. After the first rest stop, I get knocked out by a frying pan, and have to go looking for her. When I see her off in the distance, I make an athletics check to run up to her and jump right in front of her, then intimidation because fuck this chick. She faints, then I see a polar bear running up to me.
This was not my smartest moment, but I fight the polar bear. He misses once, but the second hit brings me down to 3 health out of 15. Luckily I used my frost breath to slow him down (it's not actually what it does, but I convinced my DM to let this work...which makes less sense now that I think of it) and deal good damage. Then I finished him off with a single attack (it was either kill it or die, or run away. I thought I might as well risk it). So it's dead, I politely (no) tell the girl that her idea of running away IN A FROZEN TUNDRA, MILES FROM CIVILIZATION, is not the best idea. She promises to not run away anymore, and I see two bear cubs off in the distance. Which means I killed their mother...it was self defense.
After that we set up camp, I make an impromptu alarm with rope, pots and pans. After that we wake up to see what looked like a snowstorm, so I ripped up my bedroll to make a blanket to wrap around her for extra warmth (frost resistance. So lore wise I don't need heavy clothing). Arriving to the storm she realizes that it isn't a storm, but a frost wyrm. Thinking quickly, I throw the frying pan off in the distance. Nothing happened. Then I got her off the pony (I keep forgetting to say things. She also offered to pay the same price I'd get for delivering her in her jewels. I didn't decline necessarily, but I told her that leaving her alone in a slave city (where her fiance is a powerful lord) is a bad idea), and slapped that pony's ass to get to run in another direction. Wyrm followed (thank you Tremors). Since the pony had most of our supplies, I decided it was best to keep moving till we found a safe location. Then we fell into a wyrm hole. I took little falling damage and I caught her before we landed. I took two javelins and used them to climb up by stabbing into the walls with the girl on my back. Near the stop she said she couldn't hold on, so I grabbed her from my back, threw her up out of the hole with one hand (18 Str) and fell back into the hole. Then I climbed back out. I rolled checks to find food and avoid another wyrm hole, which I got a 1 on and fell into another right away (alone thankfully). After getting out we wandered for awhile (I was already late in delivering the girl, so I'd lose 100gp out of my 500) and found some wolves eating dinner. Not in the mood to fight, we gave a wide birth as we walked around them. Then we had to make camp, and since we found now caves or trees (completely flat) I had to make an impromptu tent for her with the bed roll and four javelins. At night we got surrounded by a barbarian trip, who wanted the girl. They meant no harm, and said that she couldn't go to the black city (our destination) because the lord is a powerful wizard who needed her for sacrifice as she had powerful magical essence (which would have been great to know!). I was able to convince the tribe to bring us to their home for this conversation. The tribe chief said he wanted her to be his wife, and me and the girl had a long conversation earlier about mating rituals. Seeing the girl had a shitty bag with whatever she got, I offered the leader a deal. We fight, if you win then she is yours, if I win then she is allowed to live with you all, but can make her own choices on who to marry. He agreed and we fought in the ring. First turn I slammed him to a wall and hit him hard. He tried to break free on his turn, but I wouldn't budge. Then I used my frost breath, but he made the save and took half damage (still six, but did better than the bear). Then he pushed me off and grappled me, ripping my weapon away. I had only 10 life left and no weapon, so I decided to use my rage for the first time. I broke out of his hold, and decked him straight in the face for 7 straight damage. He went down, I won. After that he let me take some supplies, and told me of someone to meet in the black city for information on slaves (my character is looking for his two siblings who were captured by slavers a year ago). Then I went off.
Next session I'll be in a group. So I'm excited.

From what I can tell, it's suppose to be a rogue that will go into the thief archetype and a wizard going into the necromancy school. We are doing smaller groups before well all get together for the full group. Though so far I think I'm the only one who knows that.
Edit: I'm planning on going totem warrior, picking bear spirit first. Not sure if I'll go straight bear though.

My Minotaur is a Bear Totem user too (the original version of Argas used the 3.5 Implacatible variant Barbarian, which grants Con and Dex bonuses when Raging, so he was always more defensive than most Barbarians).

Even if I wasn't going defensive. I'd still pick bear. It looks too good to pass up!

I know what you mean about the effects not being too bad (I would have still just picked the most defensive set of abilities anyway to be honest).

Better to survive the superhit than give superhits. I don't play glass cannons, and if I do I always master how to dodge.
